Hi all.

Still have'nt changed my tyres yet. Just cant make up my mind. I have one last question. What I would like to find out is how many miles people have been able to get out of their Yoko A048 tires. I am looking for mainly road use, so not too interested about how long they lasted on track. Would also be usefull to know how long the fronts lasted in comparison to the rears. Please state if you give tham a lot of stick or take it easy. All help much apprieciated !

Rears on my Exige were changed at 5000 miles which included 1000 gentle running in miles, one trackday at Donnington and a VMAX day at Bruntingthorpe.

Since then I have done another 2000 miles and another day at Donnington.

Fronts are still the originals but will probably need to be replaced in the new year (after another trackday at Bedford)

Normal use is a micture of gentle town driving and country road hooning.

There is supposed to be a group buy on Toyo R888's on SELOC which supposedly offer the same grip levels as AO48's but are more hard wearing.

Also not sure but you may need to uprate the toe links on your S160 - Sure someone who knows about them will be along soon to confirm.

if you are looking for mainly road use, 48s are not really a suitable tyre. they are totally rubbish in the wet and don't get up to temperature and therefore grip (unless you are really pressing on). for the road i suggest the yoko advan, or if you are looking for something with similar dry grip to 48s, but superior wet grip try pirelli p zero type c.

I've never had a problem with 48's in the wet, they have more grip than normal tyres. The only problems is standing water (puddles). But if its raingin that heavily you need to be careful anyway.

Ding. They are fine in the wet as long as they have some tread and you dont drive like an idiot

Agreed - I did a airfield training day in torrential rain and found that 48's had pretty good grip up to a point, but then when they did loose grip it was like hitting ice and went from good grip to NO grip in a flash. This is the complete opposite to the dry performance that is totally predictable.

If you dont push them hard in the wet you should be fine but as soon as they get overwhelmed then your spinning.

my rears lasted 5500 miles.
this included one airfield training day

mileage is now about 7500
new rears have 4mm left, as do the original fronts which are still going strong

I think it is the wrong time of year to put A048 on the car. With all the recent rain, big puddles and standing water the only aim should be to get them off the car!

I don't know what planet you guys live on!?

Just pulled off my 48's after a couple of thousand miles and can confirm they are a dreadful road tyre. Wet weather there is little grip although they are progressive compared to some road/race tyres i've run. Standing water is dangerous though and if you aren't finding the (very low) limits of grip regularly when the roads are sodden then you really are driving like a girl. On top of this the sidewalls are very stiff which wrecks the ride quality and the sort of performance they offer in the dry with some heat in them has no place on the public roads! Oh, and they tramline.

If you want to run mostly on the roads go for 39's - far far better suited.

.

Can I suggest you have the wrong car! Ride quality? Too much performance?

I don't actually have a pax seat in that. Shame really as otherwise I could have scared a few people in it yesterday... nothing like 800bhp and a wet track!

I must say, I take Randy's point about performance on public roads. When I have driven with my 048's on the road in the dry, they offer so much more grip - I would have to be insane to generate any degree of fun misbehaviour in the car without getting killed. I can at least play on the Bridgestones and get them to unstick and have a laugh. The 048's are about 15-20mph faster round the same roundabout in the dry - makes for a much bigger off. Being a scared wimp I don't run them on the road. Actually I can't afford to - to little durability.
