Opinion asked: MY06 airbags

Wife approval on next car was subject to it having abs&airbag.
Well it'll have traction control too, but also cupholders

So I'm about to order a MY06 exige.

Would like opinions here about the airbag option. I understand it's essentially the US dashboard, where the bags were necesssary.

Did they do crash tests in the US? Did safety really improve with the bags or it's just that they're there so the car could be sold beacuse of the last tick on the need-to-have list?

in any case having bags and aircon brings the exige up to 35k.it's shocking.
I only hope that it will be raelly feasible to fit a SC in the future (I would not be so sure about an Elise in that respect).

Why not get harnesses instead, that totally dispenses with the need for an airbag then?
