Looking to buy my first Elise, but have never driven one.

Are there any companies in Scotland, or the North of England, that hire out S1 Elises by the day or for a long weekend?

Have tried various classic car clubs and the like but with no joy.

There is 97 Elise with 48k for sale at a dealer in Livingston for £7995, surely this one must be one of the rougher ones available.

If I test drive that one and like it any others can only get better!

heh, indeed. At that price something must be wrong with it or the dealer doesn't know what it is he's selling Try it. If it disappoints you there obviously something wrong with the car

I spotted the one that was 7995, looked like a good buy. I looked at a 8995 example from a garage in Fife and it was a dog though. Cut out 3times on the testdrive!

Ended up spending a couple of k more for a newer warranteed car,

maybe ask the question on www.scottishelises.com someone may know of a hire place?

Mileage was highish, and the advert didnt say if it had done any field hopping or central reservation barrier touching though....

Hi Mate

Mine is for sale, here is the spec

Well the time has come to part with my pride and joy. The reason for this is because I have to give up my company car. I have just changed job roles and the company say I no longer need a motor.

Here is the basic spec that you will all want to know

• Lotus Elise S1 – Early model April 1998 R Reg
• Black bodywork with optional cream leather interior
• 28,500 Miles
• Full Lotus Dealer Service History (Formula 1 Newcastle)
• Tax Until end March 2006
• MOT Until April 2006
• Optional driving lamps
• Tracker Monitor
• Optional Cobra Thatcham Cat 1 Alarm & Immobiliser
• HPI Clear with Certificate
• Excellent condition.

I have owned the car since February 2004; it had 22,000 miles on the clock at this time so it’s only done 6,000 miles in 20 months

Now to the detailed info for you all to digest. The car is an April 1998 model so it has some benefits over later S1 models, these being lightweight MMC brake discs and pads all-round, Aluminium Hubs and a lighter rear clamshell due to the boot bag set-up. All of these have weight saving benefits over later S1’s and the MMC brakes, if looked after should last for at least 60,000 miles.

Engine:

Rover K Series 1.8 16v engine with genuine Lotus S160 engine upgrade. I purchased a genuine S160 cylinder head complete with all of the S160 ancillaries to transform the original engine from 118BHP/122lb.ft to 172BHP/142lb.ft. The complete spec is as follows:

• Hurricane cold air induction system with carbon fibre heat shield/
• 52mm aluminium Trophy throttle body
• S160 aluminium inlet plenum with enlarged ports to match cylinder head inlet ports.
• S160 complete cylinder head including S160 cams, ported and polished inlet & exhaust ports, reworked combustion chambers, reworked standard size valves by DVA, head skimmed to raise compression ratio, Piper verniers and Piper cambelt
• Piper 4-2-1 long branch exhaust manifold in stainless steel
• Cat replacement pipe in stainless steel (original cat included)
• Eliseparts exhaust silencer in stainless steel
• Emerald programmable ECU
• Eliseparts adjustable engine steady bar

Transmission:

• Rover PG1 Gearbox complete with Eliseparts uprated gear linkage kit to improve the gearshift and make it more precise.

Suspension:

The suspension was upgraded in August 2004 with the Elise S2 kit which comprises of 4 new Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs and new brackets. This was supplied by F1 Lotus, installed and a full Geometry set-up performed at a cost of over£800
A full suspension overhaul was completed in August 2005 and comprised of the following:

• Complete set of new ball joints fitted
• Complete set of nylatron wishbone bushes fitted
• All wishbones refurbished and zinc powder coated to prevent corrosion
• New anti-roll bar drop links fitted
• Nylatron anti-roll bar bushes fitted
• Eliseparts uprated uniball toe link kit fitted
• Full geometry setup

Cost for the parts alone was over £750 and fitting was expensive as this was a labour intensive job.

Steering:

New track rod ends were fitted along with new steering rack gaiters in April 2004

Wheels & Tyres:

Original Lotus double 5 spoke wheels with Yokohama Advan Neova LTS tyres, currently with 6mm rear tread and 7mm front tread.

Brakes:

Original Lotus/AP brakes with lightweight MMC discs and pads. Stainless steel braided hoses were fitted in June 2005 and brake fluid was drained and renewed with Super DOT4

Interior:

Optional cream leather interior with 4 point Luke harnesses and harness bar.

Performance:

The standard performance figures for this car are in common circulation, 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 126mph, but with the engine upgrades it’s much quicker than standard.

Service History:

I have detailed the service history of the car below, as you can see it has been serviced by F1 Lotus without fail. All services are accompanied by a dealer stamp and detailed invoice.
• 1k Service/oil change 1381 miles 22/05/1998
• A Service 5647 miles 18/06/1999
• A Service 10515 miles 12/01/2001
• B Service 13016 miles 29/08/2001
• A Service 14432 miles 23/04/2002
• A Service 20818 miles 10/11/2003
• C Service 24680 miles 14/12/2004

The car is due to have an A service in December 2005. I will have this completed by the local Lotus specialist, Jude Performance Services on agreement of sale and deposit.
