As I understand, top speed of the exige is less due to the drag of the spoiler. Tyres and wheels and specific geo set-up is usefull for cornering performance and to some extend straight performance (0-60 times)
Does the spoiler play a role when travelling at less than 60 mph?
What is the exact role of the rear spoiler?

Despite Lotus's comments, it does not add a lot of downforce. Total downforce of the front splitter, rear diffuser and wing was about 40kg (the weight of a new-born rhinoceros as lotus quoted) at I think 80mph (might have been 100mph) As a downforce to drag accessory, it is not that efficient. I am pretty sure its primary role is cosmetic - car looks odd without it. Unless you are going at serios speeds on a track, it won't be adding tire melting downforce. The diffuser probably does nearly as much - especially the extended ones.

I know stand back to get shot by every exige owner. Fact is I do think it looks great and any downforce potentially helps, but not at low speeds. Probably only has a real role in high speed corners.

Agree. I am afraid someone will answer "At rest, for the look."

I wouldn't lean on it too much, doesn't feel that firm, still it looks good though. Must admit to liking the S1 exige spoiler more, and it was adjustable i think. Its a shame that the airbox mounted on the roof doesn't actually do something, but again looks good.
I have been very tempted with the front lip spoiler, looks good and probably aids with downforce also, but am i really going to be traveling that fast to really notice, i doubt it.

On the Exige Cup 240 they make the airbox on the roof work to cool the intercooler! and yep, it looks cool look at this, you can see the intercooler inlet goes into the aircatcher on the roof

A plank of 6x1 i reckon will do the job, with a couple of ice cream lids nailed on the end for good measure .I imagine you could remove it and fill in the hole that's left, and then fit an S1 type spoiler. I wonder when the S2 Exige was in the design stages, what other spoilers were thought of and then discarded ?

There are far too many variables to do a quick assessment. It does depend on its position in the overall airflow over the car. But my gut feel is that the sides of the spoiler are too small to stop air spiling over the edge before it has done any good.

It does look bloody good and adds to the aura of a racing car. That could be where its value lies!

It's very useful for helping cyclists get back on their feet when they've mis-judged their speed and 'crashed' into it! As happened to ameyc early one morning last year - he said he heard the noise and looked in the rear view mirror to see a hand using the spoiler to hoist themselves upright again!! Bloody funny.

Pic-nic table?

Superb, in a car with no cup holders, you have an area for a garden party!

I wonder if that was the girl I work with - she crashed her bike into a car turning into the dealership some time ago on her way into work, not sure she fell off though and it might have been a Jag. Maybe the Westover lads have got some kind of 'Death Race 2000' points board running...

I shoudn't be saying this seeing as I have one of said spoilers...

- maybe it could be used for doing some extreme ironing at high speed

We use Twinpipes to eat burgers of off when we go on a burger run.

Ironing? We are mostly blokes, can the wife keep up long enough to iron?

you're funny

It would be an added challenge that the man has to try and learn how to use the iron at the same time.

Naaah, that'll probably be too difficult as it would require multi-tasking

oooooh, handbags out!

We dont need to learn how to iron, just how to MAKE the wife do it. One is a repititve job you dont want to do, the other is a repetitive job but if all goes well she will "train up" without a problem.

When the training is done correctly, there are a whole lot of tasks that you dont have to worry about.

darling I know you are off and reading this today, please understand that this is just a joke and I have the deepest love and respect for you and also remember that I have never made you do my ironing, that is what my Mum is for!

Basically you guys are way off track when it comes to spoilers. There are aerodynamic versions that offer all the downforce you require without causing excessive drag. Indeed I have chosen specific examples to suit each of the bolocs members and there individual requirements. As you will see, the exige spoiler is woefully inadequate, even as an ironing board.

First: When the entire BoLOCs crew are together for extreme ironing (Minidiva excluded)

For Minidiva - who will not be ironing and therefore does not need the drag of a spoiler:

For Beachbum - because he's too tall for a standard spoiler / ironing board

For Gooby who needs more power withut the drag:

For me with kids:

And lastly, for the swanage burger run:

I hope this clarifies all the important practical and aerodynamic issues of spoilers.

I'm having a crap day, but that gave me a moment of entertainment - thanks!
