A 1984 Mini?

Wondered if anyone out there can help me? I have bought some Shurlok gauges from a Series 2 Elise. I also have gone to the trouble of putting a Series 1 Elise engine into my 1984 Mini, and was hoping to have the gauges working from it, however it hasn't quite gone to plan!

The gauges are wired as per the circuit diagram. When they were connected to the permanent live there were some mechanical whirring noises which I take as a good sign. When ignition is switched on, all the lights come on then extinguish, with the seatbelt light blinking a few times, the needles on both gauges also move up slightly to the zero positions. When the engine is started, oil and battery light go out as they should, but the tacho doesn't respond. The temperature part of the display remains blank and when driven the speedo doesn't work. The fuel gauge works, in a fashion, but is probably due to the sender on the Mini's tank, which I can play with.

The tacho signal is from the negative side of the coil. The temperature signal is from a standard Rover sender. The speed signal is from a Rover hall effect transducer on the gearbox, and the pulse is altered by a speedo healer because of the difference in wheel size from Elise to Mini.

Annoyingly, tacho, speed and temp signals are all shown going to the engine ECU before the dash so I don't know if there's any trickery going on in there?

Previous to these I had a set of Rover 400 clocks in there which worked fine, so I know everything up to the dash is good.

Apologies for the short essay but I've been scratching my head with these for a while now!

Cheers
