I've asked in the Engine & Drivechain forum about what other boxes are available to fit the k-series engine. Seems there's a Quaife box that needs adapting & a cog kit, or a Gemini box that fits straight on (30kg seqential dog box).

Has anybody fitted anything else, or are you all happy with the standard PG1 gearbox?

What are you trying to achieve, is the question?

Standard PG1 gearbox has ridiculously long gearing for something like the Elise. The close ratio box is better, or there are the 5 and 6 speed gearkits from Quaiffe if it is gearing that is the problem. Obviously you have the option of changing the final drive ratio, with any of the boxes, to bring down overall gearing.

After that, you are into sequential boxes, but IMHO these are a bit questionable in terms of practicality for road use.

From the looks of it, only the Gemini 'box is worth goig for, and that's 12k(!!).

The problem for me isn't so much the ratios, but the linkage; it feels too long, quite slack and the odd gear change feels clunky. I think there's a short shifter modifiction which I might look into, along with maybe a different clutch.

just get a quickshift lever and linkage kit from www.eliseparts.com...then spend a couple of hours adjusting/lubing/playing with the adjusters at the rear and you can improve things quite a lot ..........

2nd vote for the shortshifter and linkage - certainly before considering a different gearbox. Totally transforms the gearchange. Looks better too. Best mod so far, together with the Larini. Worst mod (thread drift) - K/N induction kit currently in a box in the garage.

Looks good, and at 100 quid (quick shift & gear linkage) much less than the 8k I was looking at for an ex-rally gemini 'box! Therefore much less likely to get me kicked into the dog-house with the misses

Good decision mate - I see you are based between London and Wiltshire. If you have hassles, drop by and I will help you with it. I am 1 mile from M4 junction 11.
