Hi,I was just wondering who on this forum actually has a 240R or CUP 240. Having just ordered mine I am keen to establish who else out there has them so we can keep in contact and discuss boring things like suspension set up, general experiences and hopefully very few "quality" issues.

Stuart

GTRene, you may as well join in because "you know it makes sense"

Hi stuart, i have just gotten off the phone with my dealer and was looking to change my exige for a 240R but i think he was only thinking about the cup car. He was talking about roll cages etc and i dont want these things. i just want the greater power and limited slip diff etc.
Can you shed any light on what i can upgrade too?

Its the 240r or a GT3. girlfriend loves the lotus though.....

Thanks Stuart, though I sadly haven't one yet I contacted my supplyer and he told me its not their yet, but as soon when the car arive's he phone me and we will set a apointment for a testdrive and if we could make a deal(I hope I have sold my beemer at that time that way I can get more money then when I turn my car in as px)
The Exige S2 is a masterpiece in size, cost per mile, driversfun, exclusivety and BIG grin factor.
The Cup and 240 models can even take it to higher levels!
The car I'm after is a 2005 Exige Cup 240 in the color Graphite Grey(though black is my favorit color but I'm not complaining)and as soon I know more I will post it ofcorse!
Its funny to read some contributions here, when the most are so passionated about their cars, especialy when they are talking about their Elise's some say; I enjoy it so much I can't see it replaced for something else, or I "never" intend to sell it...
But then when they see some beautifull picture's of a S2 Exige they almost melt and say; I want one too I like that, those are my thoughts too I'm a car passioned man too its a hobby and "freedom" and a joy factor in my live
Hope to see a lot of you in the near future,
GTRene

I've got a yellow 240R ch#04

The Cup 240 is now available in two specifications, race and road. The road is the same as the 240R without the wheels and leather trim inside but it does have traction and a limited slip diff and with met/lifestyle paint lists at £48K + Makes the 240R look like good value now!!!!

Speed yellow, do you have any pics of the car yet? is it the 240 with or with out the cage?
You mentioned list price for a cup 240 but do you know the list for a normal 240?

The cup is the only 240 car you can buy now, the car I've bought is one of the 50 240R cars released middle of last year.

The price for the cup cars (road or race) is the same, the road has aircon and stereo (no central locking though !?!?!) and the race has no aircon, cage, fire and ignition cutouts.

According to my dealer on monday they had the following available in cup specification, which they lift to 240 spec post registration.

Storm Titanium
Starlight Black (now gone as I bought it yesterday)
Laser Blue
Solar Yellow
Ardent Red

And for those of you who are unaware Lotus launched a very attractive finance deal this month.

Anyone got first impressions of their own cars to share.

It has a stage one system fitted as standard, my last Exige had a stage two which is very very loud and not something I would have chosen, but it came with the car. Cruising at 70 would make your ears bleed but at about 83 it was very quiet, there were just some rev points you can't sit at for long periods without going deaf.

The stage one is the best compromise of noise and track friendliness IMHO.

How do you find the Ohlins (given that it is winter) did they give you some nice owners documentation with setup information. Or standard manual with a photocopied page giving a step for a hint?

Stuart my dealer offered me the same list of cars this morning. well done for choosing one. i dont do track days so i would find the cage a touch overkill for my needs. will have to keep an eye out for a 240r then.
Thanks for the info fellas, most helpfull.
pics when new toys arrive please.

So you have it already, or are waiting to pick it up ?

Breakfast hasnt been suggested yet, but now they know there is a chance of seeing a 240R, I think it might get mentioned soon. Usually gets raised as a seperate thread.

Strictly speaking i do not think it is limited but according to sales bul**it it is. I had read that the limitation was merely capacity within the Motorsort division who finish the cars. You pre-register an Exige Cup which is then upgraded as the Cup 240 is not homologated for sale as a road car (allegedly)

Here some info about Exige's most you know ofcorse, but I read it sometimes again and again for reminders;
In contrast, the first Exige was a different animal. It was only built in limited numbers -- about 600 cars -- to offer drivers a road-legal version of the Motorsport Elise. It's very fast on the track, but not really suitable for everyday driving.

The S2 changed that. It was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2004, at same time the Exige S2 Cup car, which was specially developed for the Lotus Cup Europe, and which Lotus describes as "a road registered race car straight out of the box".

Both the Exige and the Exige Cup car are built on the same production line at Lotus' plant at Hethel with only minor modifications. The difference is that the Cup car takes an extra three weeks to be assembled and modified at the Lotus Sport plant. That's reflected in the price, as the Cup car is some £7,000 more expensive than the standard Exige and only available at one of the nine official Lotus Cup dealers.

Exige Cup
The following points differentiate the Cup version from the standard Exige:

Six-point FIA safety cage
Sport seats
Four-point seat belt
Electrically operated fire-extinguishing system
Battery isolation switches inside and out
Oil sump monitoring system
Adjustable front stabiliser
Two-way adjustable shock absorbers
Limited slip differential
Strengthened clutch plate and cover
Aluminium rims in silver
A Lotus Sport Division production plate.
Sport Exige 240R
The Cup Exige isn't a limited edition -- it's only limited by the capacity at Lotus Sport and in the last 18 months, the division has produced some 55 cars. And this year 2005, Lotus unveiled the first supercharged Exige at the Geneva Motor Show: the Sport Exige 240R -- a 50-car limited edition that sold out within three weeks.

Due to the development costs involved, it was rumoured that Lotus will make the supercharger available as an option other Lotus cars, although it's been available from Lotus Motorsport exclusively to the Exige Cup cars since July. Assembled in the Lotus Sport plant Hethel or at one of the European Lotus Cup dealers, the supercharged 240 will develop 243bhp instead of the current 189bhp from its Lotus-modded Toyota engine.

About 30 hours are needed to fit the supercharger. The kit contains 151 parts in total, including the Eaton supercharger itself, intercooler, modified engine management system, new grille for the air intake on the hard top, new catalytic converter and many other small bits and things like gaskets, bolts, tubes and screws.

To fit it, the rear clamshell, hard top, exhaust and many other small parts must be removed. But, unlike a turbo, a supercharger can be built around the engine, so it's not necessary to open the engine. The intercooler will be fitted on the engine, which is why it's not possible to fit this kit without modifications in the Elise 111R, although the design of the Circuit Car, unveiled at Shelsley Walsh this summer, shows that it's possible to fit the cooler in a different place.

The supercharger kit including fitting costs about £8,700.

Driving the cars
We got hold of a new Cup 240 to see what it adds to the range. Entering the Cup 240 car is more difficult than the standard car due to the roll cage: if you're going to wear a helmet in the car you have to be under six feet tall.(this wass also a discussion in a thread, Shang-man?) If you prefer to drive it without a roll cage, the cage can be removed in an hour but both cars fit like race cars: the interior is small, but not too small and you immediately get the impression that you are as one with the car.

Fasten your three-point seatbelts in the Exige and the four-point belts in the Cup 240 and look in the mirrors. The rear view from the standard car was already restricted, but in the supercharged Exige you see nothing but the intercooler.

You can feel the difference between the two cars as soon as you start the engines. Their characteristics are completely different, the sound of the supercharged cup car being much deeper and throaty. And full power in the Cup 240 feels like sitting in a jet at take-off.

In the standard Exige, the cam profile changes at 6,200rpm, the rush is similar to someone pushing a button of a nitrous oxide-boosted engine. With the modified engine management system, the cam profile of the supercharged Exige 240 changes at 4,000rpm(this point was also disguised but as you can see the cam timing can be changed!), but the effect is less spectacular than in the standard Exige.

The only problem -- if problem it is -- is that you simply can't drive the supercharged car slowly. now there I will have a problem The sound of the supercharger alone is seriously addictive. So if you want to drive the standard Exige fast, when you're following the supercharged Exige 240 you have to change gear much more often, especially at speeds over 60mph -- and of course the supercharged car reacts much faster than the standard.

The standard Exige offers a non-adjustable suspension from Bilstein, while the Cup 240 has an adjustable Öhlins suspension. The Cup 240 feels glued to the track due to the Yokohama semi-slick A048s, providing tremendous cornering ability. On the road, on the other hand, the Cup 240's suspension feels more sensitive than the Bilstein dampers of the standard Exige, especially on the German autobahn at high speed, due to lorry-carved ruts.

The steering in both cars is similarly direct and offers a real go-kart feeling. The brakes are easy to handle and offer superb retardation, with no fade after several hard stops. On the car we tested, the Cup car had optional stainless steel brake lines and sport brake pads, which still improve the efficiency of the brakes, but the ABS kicks in more often.

Performance
With the Cup 240 we didn't manage to accelerate to 60 mph in under five seconds, whereas Lotus claims four seconds. The standard Exige should achieve this in 5.2 seconds -- we measured 5.5 seconds. We also compared the speedos on both cars with a highly accurate GPS-derived measurement and found that the speedos on both cars over-read by between 5-8 mph at 150mph, which is not a bad margin of accuracy.

Which to choose?
So which car do I prefer? For the road, the standard Exige is the one for me: the power is more than enough for daily use and it offers more comfort. The Cup 240 is the perfect toy for the track -- on the road I would lose my driving licence within days...
