Hi,

I'm thinking of organising a day with a few mates, probably with Car Limits. Was wondering what people experiences of insurance were. Do you find that your regular insurance covers? Or do you generally take out additional insurance with another company. And if so, is it expensive?

Thanks
J

No need for extra insurance - it is considered training. Besides - if you damage your car at North Weald, you would have to be a total loony who is legally blind, has a simultaneous rush of blood, is likely drunk and incredibly stupid. I am not meaning to be insulting here - I can't think of a safer place to drive a car.

The greatest damage that happened to a car at North Weald was when a bloke got lost on the slalom course, hit a cone and scratched his bumper! Andy uses soft cones now.

Thanks shangani, if I need to screen the lads for looniness, drunkeness and stupidity I might not be able to get four together!!! Sounds like we should be OK, I'll check with the insurance comp.

Shanghani is right...but be careful how you word it to the dumb ass on the phone at the insurance co...it IS driver training, no helmet required and covered by your normal insurance....NOT a trackday !

Elephant certainly will NOT cover you on this kind of day, the same with most other insurers too!

Exclusion number 9 from my Policy with Elephant:
=============================================

Any accident, loss, injury or damage when your car is in an area or airport premises where aircraft are usually to be found taking off, landing, manouevring or parked OR TO WHICH THE PUBLIC DOES NOT HAVE FREE VEHICULAR ACCESS.

=============================================

That excludes any driving activity off the road which members of the public can not just drive onto and also join for free. That is in addition to the provisions mentioning trackdays.

That said, North Weald is pretty safe, there are only a couple of areas where you could possibly hit something. On the area used for the slalom apparently someone has hit the toilet block before and on the tight left hander I have seen someone slide off the straight bit in wet conditions ending up a few feet from the fence.

Just checked my policy with Bell Direct and I have exactly the same wording as Muncher - I would guess form the same underwriter.

Given that I am a cautious type who would want to do this with insurance - which other companies or organisations would pher's recommend?

J, I am cautious about this, hence having not done any "real" track days in my car, yet I am quite happy to do Walshy days and indeed let other people drive my car there.

I'm very cautious with insurance etc but you really wont need any for a Carlimits day.

There's nothing at all to hit.

Plus, policies specifically for these days (your current insurers seem to exclude them) usually have an excess of 10% of the value of your car.

There's just no way you'll hit anything at all!

I can endorse what others have posted as well

I went in my 4 month 111R with a m8 in his 348 ... we didn't bother with insurance ... there's nothing to hit if you follow the instructions.

What you will have is plenty of fun ...
