Right. I have a 111s and i love it. However, i just had a look on the Lotus website and was shocked to see the cost of an Exige - I didnt realise they were "only" £30k - i could have sworn they were £45k (not sure why, i must have dreamt it!)

Anyway, i love soft tops and wanted to know if you can have a rag roof on an exige?

I know the roof comes off, but hard tops annoy me - they prevent any spur of the moment roof off action!

Im not going to buy at the moment, but i may quite shortly at that price!

£45K is Exige Cup or 240R territory.

Yes, it's physically possible to install a soft roof as the Exige's h/t is fitted in exactly trhe same way as the Elise's roof. All you need to do is have the front and rear fixings for the roof stays installed, any competent Lotus body shop can do this.

As the car is type approved as a fixed head be sure that your insurance company is OK with the modification. Many simply don't understand that you're not taking an angle grinder to it but simply removing a detachable panel.

Thanks. Can you store the roof in the car or does it need to be left at home?

Also wondering if anyone can tell me the cost of air con and the touring / super touring packs - are they worth the ££££.

This is worrying, at this rate ill be getting rid of my 111s (only had it 4 weeks) and getting an exige before summer!

Cheers lads

Haven't done the mod myself but don't see why you couldn't keep the roof in the car. Although the aperture is smaller the boot is of similar capacity to the S2. Failing that you could always keep it in the cab.

Mine came with ac and I'm glad it did. It's all down to personal preference though.

Seriously - "be sure that your insurance company is OK with the modification".

I don't really get why you buy an Exige and then want to take the roof off. Why not just buy a 111R?

The hard top roof will not fit in the car.

You will probably find you keep it on anyway. I havent missed having a convertible one bit. The Exige is so focused you will end up just concentrating on the driving.

Dave, good to see you back posting again mate. I'm still hankering after an Exige after Donnington. That or an early Noble but thats even less sensible. New job all that you thought it would be?

It's not just a looks thing marki.

The Exige ride is WAY different to a 111S and the engine a completely different kettle of fish.

I really wanted to fall in love with it when I tried one last year and was ready to shell out the cash there and then... except I hated it. The engine was way to peaky, the set-up hard and crashy, the cam change was abrupt and harsh etc.

I reckon with the 111S you've got a great car there. Go enjoy it. If you really want a decent price on an Exige, buy second hand and let someone else take a 10k hit and run it in for you.

Mmmmmm, lots to consider. Cheers Sworks, ill try one out before i make a decision. I do love my 111s but the exige looks so great.

If is a hard top and the soft top conversion would be a bit of a joke i dont think i would bother. Maybe if i was going to use it everyday, but as a second car that wouldnt be for me - i just lover roof off driving far too much!

Thanks again for all the comments!

The black Exige looks nice on the picture...its possible a toples Exige, on a hot day, nice...but keep your head on I like the top on look the best..a real boycar that way...in my first stadium of Elise Exige's I always looked for the Elise, partly of the small boot/trunk that the Exige S1 not had, but when the new Exige S2 arived..yummie I look for the Exige in the first place...thats the car I want to drive and can be seen in?
And I also noticed, more and more PH members want to go for the Exige S2, but still keep talking to them selfs, no the Elise is just fine, its a great car..its aaaaahhh what does that Exige looks great... come on be honest, a lot of you think that way...
