Are there different grades of coolent or is one coolent the same as the next? Also, I notice there are 2 types of coolent, green and red I think, which goes in the S1 elise?

Advice from my local specialist is the standard Unipart glycol based antifreeze. PARTCO or similar should carry.

the usual advise is to ensure you match as the existing one. They are two different chemicals that don't like each other. The Green one is MEG based (mono ethylene glycol) the pink/orange one is an OAT based fluid (organic acid technology)

Is there a colour used per car type eg elise = green, or can you use any as long as the tank is flushed out properly before replacing with a different type

If you can't tell then your only sensible choice really is to flush it out. What colour is the fluid in the tank, and is there any sort of think gunk in it or under the oil filler cap?

With it completely drained then it is up to you what you put back in. I think all the earlier S1's were on the Green MEG based fluid, however I understand that it is becoming harder to come by.

If you are just topping up make sure you use the same, ie, green or orange.

Rick is right - standard Unipart product avaiable from PartCo. I bought some the other day (mines green). Cheap as chips - it looked more yellow in the bottle if I'm honest but kind of went green when I put it in the car??

I guess if you are draining and flushing the system there is no harm in changing to the other colour. Make sure you flush it very well though if you plan to change as they are most definitely not compatible.
