I have only had my s1 Elise a week so am new to all it's little quirks, when filling up with petrol this weekend (Esso Banbury)the pump failed to shut off and as a result petrol gushed out and all over me, the car and the forecourt. I'm hoping it was a faulty pump rather than a design problem, has anyone else experienced this?

It's not a quirk of Esso, it's a feature of the Elise.
I experienced it the first time I filled up an Elise... and never again since then!

Always lift the nozzle so that it angles down, and always ease off the flow rate when you get near to the expected capacity (about 30 litres usually for me).

Above all, NEVER take your eyes off the filler hole. You can see the fuel splashing back before the pump will switch off.

Oh yes, absolutely tons of stuff that you don't find out about until it's too late.

....and remember to put your fuel filler cap back on!!!

Not long after getting the car I was driving back down the M1, stopped for petrol near Watford and then carried on, its only when I got out at home that I realised that the the fuel filler cap wasn't where it used to be!!

Realised what I'd done, and then found out how difficult it was to actually get a telephone number of a petrol station on a MW Svcs. Luckily and I mean luckily, someone actually handed it in, so drove back up in the Missus car to retrive, better than forking out the £100+ for a new one!! Its easily done (or is it that I am just simple!) as the key is not retained in the cap and therefore not needed to lock it.

Replace the screws that hold in the metal fuel filler surround and the surround itself with a better made item, the steel OEM one has a tendancy to rust.

Yet another way the S2 is superior no overfill and you can't take the key out the filler cap when its unlocked.

DanH,

just looked at your profile, nice looking car, real shame you live in the video for 'take on me' by Ah-a. Must be a daily nightmare.

Yep, but it was so cool in the 80s.

I'm more of a 90's man, 1890's. Proper values and all that.

I'm actually having trouble finding a garage where the nozzle will fit in the hole (or rather down the pipe), nevermind actually getting any fuel in?
