Hi, my S1 needs new front discs and pads, the present Lotus ones have done well.

Would I be wise to upgrade? If so, any advice on the best type - 95% of my use is 'fast-road' use. Plus, do I need to go to Sinclaires for this or can my (competent) local mechanic swap them over?

would have thought standard discs would be fine.
if anything pads are more important (maybe try mintex 1144 pads).

any reasonable garage should be able to discs and pads, probably at half the price of sinclaires as well

Swapping disc and pads out is about as simple a job as you can do on a car. If the local guy is known to you and ok, save the money and put it towards some decent pads.

EBC turbo discs with Mintex pads seems to be the most common choice (i have them on my S160)

Pagids are awesome but perhaps best reserved for track driving of complete loons.

get the new EBC USR brake discs. Eliseparts sell them but shop around as you can get then as low as £120 a set.

Combine with Mintex 1144 oads, they will be perfect

Seconded - I've been there mate but my Mintexx 1144's, though ok at first, seemed to 'go off' after only 8k miles or so, and I'm sure Tony won't mind me mentioning that he noticed the same thing. Just swapped them out for Pagid RS42s and could not be happier - pricey, yes, but so superior. They would stop a train.

PS I run EBC Turbo Groove Discs.

Stay with the Mintex 1144s if you can, I've got some Mintex 1155s on the front and they are really squeeky.

Sincs did this set-up for me and they work great. The discs are lovely. The pads don't last particularly long but they bite from cold and don't cost too much. Along with a brake fluid change these will massively increase your braking ability...

Hello from Andy Freeman the owner of EBC Brakes.

I am to say the least dissappointed that there is such a misconception about our Green and other ranges of pads and want to put this straight.

First please read below the latest compound versions we make, we have changed compounds many times through the years in fact most compounds get changed at least once a year in response to feedback. We make all our pads in the UK and respond and listen to customers, please dont treat us like a bunch of t w a t s which some of forum posts insinuate, we are Britains largest and finest manufacturer of pads and rotors and unlike others we still make our pads here, and have NOT run off the Eastern block or China to make stuff cheaper like ALL our competitors have done.

If you look on the box end labels you will see the material codes and this tells you if you have the latest materials or old stuff......ASK your retailer for these material codes.

Latest Greenstuff is AF 44/69 resin changed to produce a softer pad with less noise and slightly more grip appropriate for cars below 200BHP and not for racing at all, unless on very light cars like Caterhams and hillclimbs etc

Latest Redstuff is AF88/67 and just recently shanged to AF88/71 these two mods were made to OFFSET disc scoring reported on EVO's and reduce dust and noise at very low speeds. Only for fast street and NEVER for racing as life not up to it on a track.

Latest Yellowstuff is DM 1793 and DM 1846 which has been around for a year and is used on all UK Police chase cars and race use and adopted by Silverstone on their Elise's and Porsche fleet yet is fully streetable and a brilliant pad. The 1846 is fine for street but track work should always now use the 1793 version and that is what Silverstone use.

Then please guys ALWAYS read our website,we have our own webmaster, update the site daily and lots of good info on there.

Hope this is of use to those of you interested in a solution rather than making wild and unfair comments based on bad advice you may have received.

Please appreciate it is difficult for us or anyone to educate hundreds of stockists with turnover of staff and sometimes they even get it wrong, thanks guys

Andy - not sure if this is a viable option, but could this sort of info be posted onto Piston Heads at reqular intervals ?
Being a lazy Bar Steward, I use thbis forum at the exclusion of pretty much everywhere else to get info on what is/is not of any use to my Elise and only venture further afield if nothing is found here.
Whilst the info doesnt necessarily tell me if the pads are suited to the Elise specifically, it certainly gives me a better understanding of what is available from you

Why so confrontational?

I'd like you to point out some posts where you've been made to look like tts or where 'wild and unfair' accusations have been made.

Seriously, come here and peddle your wares as often as you like, your input is interesting but why wait until you're annoyed and then have a tantrum?????

Thanks for the information Andy but I speak as I find: I'm afraid the Greenstuffs I fitted to my Elise had all the feel of wet blocks of wood. I'm much happier with my current choice.

BTW I don't find your endorsements particularly helpful.
The Police would almost certainly be looking at cost as a major factor and I believe your pads would fare very well in such an environment. Good sales skills and keen pricing matter far more in these cases than pure performance.
I personally don't put a price on my brakes. I'm not knocking your products, they just didn't suit me.

Back on topic: I run EBC turobroove discs have been more than happy with them. I'm about to replace with another set. With the Turbogroove/Mintex combination I've found it takes me a good 25 min track session before starting to experience the first signs of fade. (Thats a boggo K engined S1 on Nitrons).

Having read Andy's comments re the Police tests on one of the other 'brake' threads then I unreservedly offer my apologies and withdraw the comment.
