as some of you may know my s1 elise was written off 10 weeks ago and i got flamed for suggesting i might replace it with a boxster.......well i have so i thought i would let you know what i think of it.
I bought a 2001 seal gray boxster s 2 weeks ago, compared to the liz it is superbly well put together, no squeeks rattles or bangs, the torque and bhp are amazing. the brakes work in the wet (unlike my mmc's)it has 2 huge boots and is quiet and comfy with climate control heated seats etc. the roof has been down more times in the last 2 weeks than the last 12 months in the liz, too much hastle being a series 1, dont like leaving it in the work carpark with the roof down and use the bike if its really nice. however.....everytime i looked at the liz i couldnt belive it was mine , just dont get that feeling looking at the boxster, and you really can feel the weight on my fave cornish a roads, in the box you feel like you are driving a fast car in the liz i felt like i was part of a fast car.
as a biker 1st, the best way i can describe it is the boxster is like a fireblade, easy to live with, superbly built, comfy and blindingly fast and the liz is like my supermoto, unpractical, uncomfy, noisy but on the right road unbeatable.as an only car i think i have made the right decision but as a 2nd car nothing would come close to an elise.
I will be back one day in a chrome orange exige s but till then ttfn
Darren

I had a feeling that you would go with the Boxter Darren. Probably better sorted to your needs at the mo. Did you get the 3.2S or 2.7?
Enjoy and look forward to seeing you around.

There's probably a bigger difference between a Boxster S and an S1 - I almost got one but settled on a 111R instead, which has quite similar performance to a Boxster S. However, although the Boxster was certainly a quality product and had all the creature comforts (I've wished the Elise had a self-folding roof many times), it felt so much less exiting to drive. You get less sensation of speed and I much prefer the Elise driving position, although that's purely personal preference.

If you can only go the 1 car route its a better choice IMHO. Having said that, as much as I have tried to combine the cars at the forthcoming change around I couldnt get on with anything that much more civilised to excite me.

It's certainly an interesting comparison.
I've had both and to be fair, performance wise, they're in a differnt league.

The Elise is quick from a standing start and, of course, amazing on a country lane but top end - on a motorway; the Boxster will absolutely hammer it.
As a day to day useable car, there's no comparison.

Accepting all that though, it's an Elise I'd have again.
Much more sense of fun, much purer of purpose and (dare I say it) much nicer owners.
Let's face it, Boxsters are rather driven by female 40 something Daily Mail readers.
Look how many Boxsters have vanity plates - a sure sign it's the badge rather than the car that people have bought.

Now, if only you could buy an Elise with a Porsche flat 6 - now that would be something...

Don't think it would hammer a 111R though:
Boxster S 0-60 - 5.5, 0-100 - 12.3
Elise 111R 0-60 - 4.9, 0-100 - 13

Only .7 of a second in it to 100. Maybe after that it would pull away, but how often do you go far above 100 on a motorway? Still, two top notch, but different cars

There may only be 0.7 seconds in it from 0-100 but the Elise is quicker to 60. The Boxster is well over a second quicker from 60-100. But then no-one would buy an Elise (or a Boxster I would have thought) as a car primarily for the motorway.

Which Elise? I'd be surprised if it's that much more than a 111R. I don't think that we can generalise about Elises too much as there's a big difference from 60 up with the 111R as opposed to some other models. Also with Boxsters for that matter, the original normal Boxster does 0-60 in 6.7 IIRC. The 111R pulls pretty hard if you're in high enough revs/ 2nd cam.

I looked at both carefully before I bought my Elise and both are really fine cars yes It just depends how much refinement you want to trade off for involvement really.

I should add that my S2 111S has no rattles or squeaks, and the soft top pops on and off in about 30 seconds.

Absolutely. A well tuned K-series will give a Box a run for it's money too. I don't remember my Sport 160 being troubled much keeping away from them, so something which has a bit more grunt should happily keep it honest.

Talk about any kind of aftermarket engine conversion, and the Box will have it's pants pulled down and it's arse smacked like a naughty 6 year-old.

Than the 111R. I was going purely on these figures:

Boxster S 0-60 - 5.5, 0-100 - 12.3
Elise 111R 0-60 - 4.9, 0-100 - 13

So the Boxster takes 6.8s 60-100, the 111R takes 8.1s.

To be honest you can feel that. I don't have an EVO handy, but isn't the Boxster S faster than the 111R around Bedford Autodrome West circuit as well? The times are in the back of the magazine. Of course I prefer the Elise though! smile

If you want to feel the love buy a Lotus if you want to be treated like Hitler then get a Boxter. Other road user's seem to hate Boxter's?

As they say the choice is yours, but I'd recommend you drive both the Boxter S and the R back to back believe me you'll buy the Lotus every time

Drove the Boxter S, Camyan S & 911 C2 back to back at Stratford Porsche the only one I'd have is the 911 the other's just don't feel that special, I'd far rather have a Europa than a Cayman anyway

Strange. I drove a 911 (poverty spec 996 C2) and Boxster S back to back and vastly preferred the Boxster. The 911 just felt obese.

Only because the Elise is quicker off the line (that's where the weight comes into play) though. How many times do you accelerate off the line on motorways? Never.

60-100 then (using those numbers) amounts to 1.3 seconds - and that's while you're in 2nd cam all the way in the 111R too. Expect a 111R to do 60-100 in 8.5-10 seconds.

Only just and the Lotus had a damp track.
