Had a flat battery, so I've swapped in a new one. Multimeter says 12.7V, so all looks good. However, it won't start. I think it's failing to unimmobilse, as there are no fuel pump noises, nothing. I can hear a relay clicking behind me somewhere when I turn the key all the way. Any ideas?

Could be that you have a bad earth or main battery feed connection somewhere and the clicking you are hearing is the solenoid on the starter motor trying to energise.

Are you sure the old battery was duff? It might have been the same problem making you think you had a bad battery b4?

Sounds like the immobilisers not disarmed, not sure if S2s have the same key thing but you'll taht to reprogramme the remote.

Well, I assumed it was just flat, so I had a friend give me a jump start and drove around for 30 mins. Came back to it the next day and it was pretty dead. The multimeter said about 2V, so I figured a new battery was in order. I'm confused as to why it would jump-start then but is failing to start with a new battery, unless jumping it somehow broke the immobiliser.

I've checked the inertia reset switch and all the relevant fuses, but no joy. :-(

Around 12.2 volts is normal for a battery to be flat. What does your new one read?
Is it turning the engine or is it just energising the starter solenoid?
Could it be stuck? Maybe a smack with a hammer?

Russ.

Edit just read top post. 2 volts was weird though on your old one, major
drain somewhere?

Well, it was left standing for three weeks in the cold. <shrug/>

It definitely feels like an immobiliser issue. This is a 2001 S2, and normally when you turn the ignition on without disabling the immobiliser it does nothing, but if you turn it on after disabling it, the fuel pump whirs for a second or two. It's not doing that. When you then turn the key, obviously you usually get the starter motor going. Neither of these things are happening, so I figure it's unlikely to be just the fuel pump or just the starter motor. Feels like an immobiliser issue to me. Very annoying. frown

Have you tried to jump start it again after fitting the new battery ? If so does it start because then that would rule out the immobiliser . Have you tried putting the new battery on charge for a few hours ,i know its new but it may be a bit low still or possibly even duff.

No, haven't tried to jump it after new battery. But the headlights work fine, everything else seems good. Will see if I can find someone to try jumping it.

Key fob only has one button. How do I re-synchronise it?

Afraid i cant remember on the single button one , something to do with that touch button thing on the column, look in the handbook .

It doesn't say how to do this in the handbook.

The alarm tell-tale lights up for the duration of me pressing the button on the key fob, but then goes back to flashing once every two seconds (i.e. normal "the immobiliser is active" operation).

Cheers,

Im sure I read that when swapping over the battery over you only have 30 secs to reconnect(unless I dreamt it), something to do with the immobiliser, try searching the elise forum for battery I'm sure i read it in there a couple of weeks ago, there were about 8 instances of dead batteries over christmas (me included)

From memory, I think you're right. IIRC you have to disconnect the battery, (I believe negative terminal and then positive) with the immobiliser dis-armed in under 30secs otherwise you will have immob issues. When re-connecting, simply do the reverse (+ then -).
