Bloody Top Gear!!

Was watching the old rerun of the Black Exige vs the Apache, and assuming a decent bonus in February, I really think that I need to upgrade the motor.

So does anyone know what I could expect PX/private for a 04 plate 2004 Elise 111S in Nightfall Blue with leather interior, hardtop (no aircon), and sports exhauist with FSH?

Depends on the mileage but one's just been sold on here for £16.5. Put it up for 16 and see what happens - bear in mind the market will be quiet at this time of year and they weren't selling brilliantly last year either.

Or just upgrade yours with track bits

23k miles.

I could go the upgrade route but I've never been too keen on upgrading as you never seem to get your money back (and it's a slippery slope towards a Honda engine....)

Is it just 111S's that aren't selling or is it all Elises?

Selling's all down to luck at the moment - it could sell in a week or could be there for months. Ironically the Exige you saw on Top Gear went up for sale last year and took a few weeks longer than hoped to go. Don't dismiss the upgrade route though - if you keep your car for a long time then it's the cheapest option. Stick Nitrons and '48s on and you've got better mechanical grip than an Exige for less than £3K. With a sports exhaust and induction chances are you're only IRO 25bhp down on power.

Would Nitrons affect the ride quality around town at all? I'm warming to the idea of upgrading, but I guess I'm a little worried about the dreaded HGF, so the Yota engine does appeal (I can stretch to an Exige S if I think it's worth it&#8230wink

If you're worried about the ride quality of Nitrons bear in mind an Exige is more stiffly sprung than an Elise, too.

I wouldn't worry about HGF - if it happens it's a £700 bill, which is similar to the amount you'll save over a year in petrol and VED costs by not buying an Exige S. Besides you could suffer oil starvation with an Exige.

Don't get me wrong, the Exige S is a fine car but it pays to look at all the options and that includes 2nd hand 240Rs and Supercharger kits for N/A Exiges as well as upgrading yours. Cost them all up, it may sound dull but there's nothing worse than paying out £10K to change cars then start wondering why 6 months later.

That was the crucial thing for me. Anyway, if the engine goes bang in a big way it'll be the perfect excuse to fit a SC Honda engine so you can leave those pesky Exiges for dead biggrin

Are ABS and/or Aircon of interest Ben? If so, then you will need to upgrade to a yota to get them. If not, then have the choice of upgrading your car.

Depends what you want exactly, but i would not be rushing to put nitrons and a048s on a car that was used mainly on the road. Admittedly i run a fairly agressive geo set-up in addition to the suspension and tyres, but i dont think the car "flows" down b-roads very nicely at all. It also tramlines and aquaplanes pretty badly, especially on the 48s.

I suppose all im trying to say is that the wrong upgrade could make things worse rather than better - depends what you are trying to achieve.

That's because you won't be able to see out the back!

Anyway, not sure I agree! My car history in 2007 was -

111R -> Exige S -> S1 111S.

A lot more K-series Elises and Exiges exist.

Sorry but take the blinkers off for a moment - all engines can fail, they all have moving parts in them. Whether it's the head gasket or oil starvation, buzzing on downchanges and liner failures instead, things can go wrong.

Oh and you'll never look back with an Exige because you can't see anything in the mirror wink

That's cause all those old metro engined car's are so far back I don't need to Yay! Anyway on a serious note don't really understand why rover's fail? Their should'nt be any problem's with oil flow through the head as they had enough time to engineer it out surly?

Now now ladies, can we keep it on topic please.

Good advice someone said regarding the extra VED and petrol that I'd have to pay.

What other consumables wold be more expensive on an Exige/S?

I can think of Tyres (how much for 4 AO48's these days?), pads (extra weight?), not sure how different servicing is either?

Yep you'll be needing a set every 5 - 6k (Rear's) around £300 for two fitted
