Just about to overhaul my brakes and have decided to go for EBC's dimpled hole and grooved discs coupled with Greenstuff pads. The set up is for normal road use only, not gonna use on a track, any thoughts?Anyone using this mix?

I would spend a bit more and get eliseparts discs and Mintex as a minimum - Greenstuff are worse than OEM and the discs dont last long in my experience - I went through a set in 10K miles and never used them again, albeit with a few trackdays - dont scrimp on brakes n tyre on an Elise

I would advise against fitting greenstuff pads at the very least. I used these for 2k, they were shit. Standard pads are better than these.

Wouldn't get Mintex either, they last around 6 months, before you know it you'll be scraping the discs. SBS or Pagids seem to be the best bet.

If all your doing is road that combo will be fine, any thing is better than std, Ebc discs are a good value and a good upgrade as for green stuff pads some love them some dont, Ihave run them in the past and had no problem on track days, but there is better on the market.

The Mintex 1144s won't last long on track but they stand up fine to road use.
For road use the EBC discs and Mintex pads are fine (Its the combo I've got). I've a set of hardly used Greenstuffs kicking around in the garage - I took them out very soon after fitting them and replaced with Mintex (much better).
Now I've started tracking my car I'll be fitting better discs and pads when the time comes though.

I;ve done 2 trackdays on my mintex 1144's and EBC USR grooved discs and plenty of road miles and they were very good and still have another track day left in them. Tipper can vouch that I dont exactly take it easy on the track. I do fancy the mintex 1155 pads next time though as they should be even better and cost only slightly more. Would be interested to know if the padgid pads are so much better than the mintex. Are they worth the expense and before you all go on about not scrimping on the brakes the mintex are better than OEM for starters, its just £200 + for Padgids is a lot when the mintex are half the price....

You're right, you don't hang around on track (didn't think you used the brakes though laugh).
The Mintex/EBC disc combo will certainly stand-up to the odd track day (mine did and will do for another day in a couple of weeks).
Olly, I think the general view is that Pagids are waaay better.
I'd fit them and then upgrade the discs when they need doing (Eliseparts or Plans Motorsports ali-discs and bells look like a good step-up to me and are the way I'll probably be going).
The Pagids that would probably be best for your use are the RS42. The Mintex 1155s (like the Pagid42s) probably won't get hot enough in road use to be properly effective (I've seen a plot of their effectiveness/temp somewhere which lead me to that conclusion).

I put Greenstuff on my 111S, a lot better than stock. Also did the hoses to
Goodridge and that was the best improvement. Not tracked this one yet though,
mind you it hardly ever comes out of the garage these days. 05 and 4200 miles!

Greenstuff are a crock of shit. If you want your car to feel like you've got blocks of wood instead of brake pads, go nuts, if you want it to stop, use Mintex or Pagids.

Re: Pagids. If you want the car to stop, relentlessly, then fit RS14's. I have them on mine for road & track use, and they are nothing short of immense. If I stand on them hard, the car stops like I've just dropped an anchor on a 3ft rope out the back.

I put RS42s on 15 months ago and in the space of nearly 12,000 miles, two trackdays and 2 activity days, they're about half worn. If you're getting more than double the wear, the extra stopping power is effectively free. If you don't want to spend £200 for both axles, get SBS instead, they do a very similar job by all accounts and cost around £130. Mintex starts to look very expensive in that context.

im an RS42 man myself - tried all the rest about 5 years ago, threw them away after 10K miles (at one point I was going through EBC discs every 10K miles inc a lot of motorway use) .....I find the RS14 just a bit too harsh from cold etc and the RS42 a good balance all round.

dont upgrade twice - fit the best you can - tyres and brakes are where your money should be spent...fair enough if it was a Corsa or something, but you dont go out and buy a "sportscar" and fit cheap crap...the Elise brakes are not that good as it is.

I run AP big discs, 4 pots and Pagids...and can repeatedly brake for 10 laps from 150mph down to 40mph etc with no fade...yeah on the road they are overkill, but so far the discs have lasted 3x as long as the EBCs on avg, so actually they are not any more expensive

For what you intend to use the car for, those discs will be fine.

I would personally use Mintex 1144's with those discs. I do and tend to get 25k miles out of them.

I think I'll give the '42s a go next time actually, see how they fair. For road use mainly, I'm sure they are about as good as it gets. And if they're good enough for the pimp-mobile... wink
