I cannot find my detachable stereo face so I'm thinking it's probably the right time to look at upgrading the sound system overall. Is it easy/strightforward to slide out/remove the main stereo unit ( sans face plate ) and just plug in a new one?

I was also hoping to drop in one of those small Alpine subs and even read about someone who put tweeters in 2 of the air ducts which sounds like a tidy solution to me. Any tips, warnings appreciated.

Piece of cake to upgrade; literally slide in a slide out, and Halfords have got some pretty good deals on "just" a radio; for less than £100 you can get an ipod-able cd/mp3 head unit that looks nice.

Oh, so long as you have the keys that fit down the side of the radio biggrin

just seen that my jvc dvd player has been reduced from 500 to 200 its one of the best head units I have ever used or seen, its got every input/output going, remote and looks absolutely splendid you can watch dvds or put a thousand tracks on one dvd or just plumb in your ipod and there are multi viewing levels and the best bit.. its not one of those with a silly screen that comes out and flips up, its a 4' screen thats always working and powerfull too !
if you want me to take some pics giz a shout !
my passenger was loving watching gone in 60 secs on the way to oulton the other month.

Be careful what you put in cos the wiring loom is attached to your speedo and the conections on the back of the stereo differ. I took out the standard Blaupunkt and replaced it with a JVC. One of the wires in the loom (purple one i think) is connected to the speedo so alters the volume depending on your speed and when plugged into the JVC it ended up having a permanent supply on it and stopped the speedo from working. The dealer told me i was lucky it never blew the ECU.
I posted about this at the time f you want to search back through the threads.
My car at the time was an 05 S2.

I was looking for a cheapish stereo to replace the OEM, but didn't want to spend too, and ended buying a Sony (but haven't got round to fittng yet :

http://www.online-caraudio.co.uk/shopscr120.html

Has USB & AUX which was good for the price + remote control. They threw in a AUX cable too, but I also bought the Ipod interface. Grand total cost of £81 after 10% discount smile
Add £8 delivery, but it was next day delivery so can't complain.

Rgds

I have to agree with that. I bought the JVC kd-avx1 for its DVD function. You can put several Gig of music on one DVD and don't have to have any other CD's or CD cases floating around the car. I can't bare the thought of an ipod cable flapping around but I'm pretty sure the input is there if 4.7GB of DVD music isn't enough. If it really is £200 it's a bargain.

Halfords should be able to sell you removal keys as well. These days, most stereo swaps are a piece of cake.
