I'm after the cheapest (structurally sound) you could imagine. Abused engine, tired bodywork, shot suspension, etc etc,

The reasoning is a little odd; my P&J is my baby, and a bit of Lotus history. After speaking to the main aftermarket s/c providers, I'm not happy with the idea of modifying her, and I think if I start on the slope of more power I'm just going to end up wanting loads more and less weight, and the car isn't one to do that to. I want a road-legal track toy with a total budget of about £20-25k

So, the lightest of the family is the s.1 Elise, and a s/c Honda (I'll investigate the Audi option which I know little about if this project looks like it has legs) seems a good option for power-to-weight that will be quite satisfactory thank you. The s/c Atom is awesome, but I want all-weather capability.

If the car's going to have an engine conversion, it might as well have shocks, big brakes, baffled sump, oil coolers, and the rest done while it's in for it. Light wheels and sticky tyres etc.

So a lot of what would put you off an elise in poor condition is all going to be replaced anyway. The bodywork I can sort myself. Other than the steering, possibly gearbox, I can't think of much I would need to ensure is in reasonable order when selecting the (essentially donor) car.

Anyone know of any examples that would suit the bill? Or any hints and tips on what to look for in the sort of project car I'm thinking of?

Or even better, anyone know of a s.1 that's had the s/c Honda conversion etc done and is up for sale in roughly my price bracket?

Thanks in advance,
Tol

That is two totally different orders. A ragged to hell S1 or a pucca S1 with a hooonda. But I see where you are coming from. You want a track slag while your P&J stays away from the tyre walls. To be honest I am looking for a Mk1 supercharged Mr2 for the same reason.

I would adopt 2 aproaches, I would talk to Schuffman or Randy about the upgraded cars (You may squeeze a good one out of £25k) and scan the ads for a cheapo, then talk to Schuffman, Randy etc about the heart swap.

It is not cheap and then there is running the thing.

I have an agreement with a couple of friends who are GJOB owners and we want a really cheap car that will be easy to mod and find spares for, give great performance and track day grins, be able to wear tyrewall with no loss of dignity and keep our babies away from those horrid, nasty track drivers. We are currently scanning the ads - unfortunatly the perfect car got away - we will find her. Going 3 ways will make it very affordable.

To be honest, a £25k track slag is a bit OTT, I would look at old radicals for that money. People I know who have done the track slag thing have found a modded S1 with rollcage and a heap of track mods to engine and suspension, including fire suppression and cut out electrics for under £10k and been really competitive.

Cheap because cat D repaired - is there a way to find out what the damage was that led to the write-off? If not structural, could suit me well...
