Hi Guys,
Contemplating an Elise S1 for trackday fun. Can't imagine I'll need more power whistle , but if I did, how easy is it to liberate more power without breaking the bank. I know you can go down the Audi TT/ Integra route, but that's way outside my budget. Looking to get up to 160ish BHP with the K series for sensible outlay. Also needs to be reliable power.... don't fancy grenade spec, as I want to be able to drive to and from track and can't afford an annual engine rebuild.

Have read the 135 thread and understand that quicker lap times come from training/ brakes/ adj susp etc, but am enquiring specifically about the engine.

All ideas/ suggestions gratefully received.
Cheers
Johnny

Buy a Sport 160 to start with thumbup Good trackday variant with a convenient 160bhp lump in the back.

They seem to be pretty hard to find, and would always worry that it hadn't been too well looked after. Lot of them seem to be highish (50k+) miles also, and low mileage examples aren't cheap. But I take your point that it would good to find a car that I wouldn't have to mess around with, and if I could find a decent one within budget, I would go for that.
Cheers

I got my S1 with the Sabre Heads 160 upgrade on it already - plus a few other choice bits such as 4-2-1 manifold, exhaust updgrade, etc

I use mine as a daily driver and a weekend toy all in one - not had a problem with it at all

Kiwirog at Sabreheads or Dave Andrews at DVA will both get you 160 bhp at reasonable cost. Both also have excellent reputations. Check out the DVA website for ideas and costs.

The S1/S2 111S VVC can get close to 180bhp with a £1500 DVA K06a head port. Even more with a £500 Emerald ECU.

What's your budget then?

There's a few in the classifieds for under £12500

I'll be the first to say it, mileage means nothing. If it's been looked after, then high miles means nothing and is certainly better than a lower mileage car that hasn't been looked after. Ask to see invoices/receipts etc.

Didn't realise I had a an annoying Doppleganger... biggrin

Plan was to pick up a standard 118BHP Elise for approx 7k - 8k and spend about a grand on engine mods and a bit more on brake and suspension mods over the next year or so.

I don't see too many Sport 160's under 11k, but perhaps I haven't been looking hard enough! Didn't want to spend that much on one and then spend another wedge putting it right.

With regard to mileage, I totally agree, but would prefer a lower mileage car with a thick file of receipts over a higher mileage car with a similar file, that's all.

Thanks for all input,... I'll checkout the websites.

Thanks

your best bet is to find a second hand Cylinder head from a higher powered K series and fit it to yours. For £1000 or so its going to be very hard to achieve. Have a look on the net at PTP power train projects. They do kits for reasonble money...

Can't understand why you are so worried about mileage: 50/60k is nothing on a K series. Think about the other cars you find it in.
You'll be hard pressed to get 160 bhp out of the K for £1K unless you can DIY. Check out suspension refresh costs too before committing. Again if you aren't prepared to DIY then it will be pricey. Finally £7-8k is likely to get you a pretty average car.

I'm not that worried about mileage... I mean to say that I'd prefer a car with lower miles, given the choice.

Re increasing the power output for about a grand, I have no idea how much it might cost... was hoping that 1k would be enough, that's why I'm asking here.

I figure that 7-8k will get me a fairly average example, but I would hope to get an accident free example with a decent file of receipts for that, and spend a bit of time replacing/ upgrading brakes/ suspension as I need to..... or am I mistaken.
Many thanks again for all your help.

Have a look at DVA Power website. Costs are very reasonable.
A good place to have another dig around is Seloc - loads on there in the archives.
To be honest most of the improvements on a basic S1 will come first from the classic idea of brakes first (Allow £500 up), Suspension (Nitron dampers £1200 + refresh of bushes, ball joints, steering rack and toe-link upgrade(£800+). Dave Andrews can get you 150 real horses for about £1500. Much beyond that you'll need to replace the ecu for an Emerald etc.
BTW, love your existing car. There's a 993RS that comes on LoT days.

Thanks Tipper. thumbup Good to get some good ball park figures on prices for upgrades. I've been out for the last few hours, but will get onto the websites sharpish.

Looking forward to getting on a few LoT days myself in the Elise. I'm worried Ive become a bit of a polisher with the RS and need to get out on track without the fear of bankruptcy /severe beating from the missus should it all end up in the armco! So the plan is to take the RS on track a bit less and get out a lot more often in the Elise woohoo

Thanks again for all help.

shout 111s

145(ish)hp as standard, can be bought for <£10k if you keep an eye open. Nicer interior/wheels and rear spoiler...

That would be where I start

Other wise, 52mm Throttle Body, 421 Manifold, Intake/Exhaust upgrades and maybe Piper/Kent cams with Verniers to make 145+hp out of a standard 118 car....

If you shop wisely and happy to buy 2nd hand then this little lot will cost way less than £500 plus fitting....
