Hi,

Took my '03 MY elise out for a spin over weekend and noticed the speedo and rev counter are both sitting above the 0 even with the car off. The speedo sits at about 20mph and the rev counter sits at about 500rpm, but both needles move once the car is moving, but still never go back to 0.

This concerns me for 2 reasons. Firstly I dont know what speed I'm doing. Second it might be affecting the odo readings.

So does anyone know how to fix it?? is it a common thing? is it affecting the odometer?

Thanks

Stack just needs resetting... they do this occasionally. Procedure is as follows:

- Turn off the ignition
- Open the driver's door (yes, really!)
- Press and hold the trip-meter reset button
- Whilst still holding the reset button turn the key in the ignition to the second position (just before the engine turns)

The Stack will then wind both needles back to below the zero position, and the LCD will show the software revision number. Once it's gone through the motions your speedo should then read true!
This seems to work on all versions of the Elise, including those with Stack and Shurlok instruments.

No worries, can't guarantee it'll fix it, but in 99 of cases out of 100 it's just a re-set issue smile It won't be affecting your odometer at all. The needles are stepper-motor driven and occasionally they can "brown out" and lose reference. They do a homing ritual every time you start up, but only to their own reference (you can see the needles twitch)... the re-set forces them to go to a mechanical stop as a kind of global re-set. As far as the stack's concerned, at the moment it's telling you the right speed, the needles just ain't pointing where they're supposed to smile

Sorry George,

You missed

- Turn off the ignition
- Open the driver's door (yes, really!)

- Wet finger left hand and place in right ear

- Press and hold the trip-meter reset button
- Whilst still holding the reset button turn the key in the ignition to the second position (just before the engine turns)

Good luck works nearly every time.

Aah sorry Andy, forgot that crucial bit of information.

It also may help to twirl your right leg in the air and have some goat's blood handy. hehe

patmahe... did you have any luck?

In that case the list should say

- Locate car (an absolute must)
- Turn off the ignition
- Open the driver's door (yes, really!)

- Wet finger left hand and place in right ear, or someone elses ear

- Press and hold the trip-meter reset button
- Whilst still holding the reset button turn the key in the ignition to the second position (just before the engine turns)

Good luck works nearly every time.

Worked a treat last night everyone thanks for your help. Wonder how much that'd cost at a dealers smile

Glad to be of service smile Usually Dealers would be able to tell you the same fix it's so simple, although I guess some people might take you for a ride.

All's well that ends well.... just keep some goat's blood handy for next time! wink
