Evening all,

Once again I am looking to pick the brains of your goodselves and to drink from the collective fountain of knowledge, or was that furry cup!? coincidentally the minimum 'legal' height of a mini skirt is an half an inch below minge base, anyways.

I am just testing the water to get an idea of the general running costs associated with elise ownership. Taking insurance premiums aside as this obviously differs from owner to owner can anybody give me a ball park figure of monthly running costs.

I would like to think the Elise is more economical than my current Pulsar GtiR and am aware that regular 9k services cost around £250.00 + vat (or so i am led to believe).

I guess what im getting at is frequencies in which tires have been replaced, how often oil changes take place etc.

After taking into account non car related payments and also including my potential insurance costs I have a disposable income of around 600 - 700 per month to 'blow', my concern is that I do not want to purchase a car I cannot afford to keep and maintain.

Much obliged for any useful information than anyone could provide to a potential owner.

many thanks and my regards to the missuses

Jonny
a potential owner with troll tendancies :P (i jest about the trawling bit anyway)

OK, figures will vary from person to person I'm sure, but my figures are something like (and these are from memory so might not be 100%, but should give an idea:

Tax = £150
Insurance = £700
Tracker = £100
Warranty = £150
Servicing + bits n bobs £500 - £1000

per annum, + petrol (35 mpg ish)

... worth every penny times a hundred !!

Roughly in 18 months of ownership, old P reg S1...

Tax £180 I think- correct me if I am wrong
Insurance £350
Servicing and MOT- we get these done together, year 1 was about 330, years 2 was about 250 inclusive of VAT
Tyres- £100 a corner, first set lasted 8 months- whoops, 2nd set have been on about the same and look as good as new.

Optional upgrades have totalled about £600, included suspension, which needed doing anyway, and some other bits that needed doing that were not essential to the imediate welfare of the car

Running costs will depend to a great extent on the age and mileage of the car you buy.
My K series gives me about 37 mpg on the road (teens on track.
Rear tyres last me about 8,000 road miles, fronts you chuck every two sets of rears (you'll never wear them out, they just go hard!). Oil changes on a K are 9,000 miles or less (depending on varient and track days). Services every 9K (with oil change) running A (basically Oil, filter and safety check), A and then a B (as A plus coolant, brake fluid etc) and then A,A and then C (as B plus cambelt if its due). Cambelts on K series engines are due for a change every 48k miles or four years (whichever comes first).
In addition you'll have brake pads (say Mintex 1144 at £100 a set) and discs (cost dependant on how much you want to spend), Suspension items that need occasional maintenance, the inevitable essential upgrades that you'll have to havewink etc, etc.
As a road car the Elise is cheap to run for the type of car it is. Obviously if you track the car then it will cost more but again, for its performance, the Elise is remarkable cheap to run.
Sorry I can't give you any more definate figures, I try not to keep to close an eye on what I spend on the car! However its worth saying that I bought my car in December 2005 with 39k on the clock and she's now covered 63k. Things I've had to spend money on: Two A services, two sets of brake pads and two sets of tyres. I've also just replaced my dampers.
Imminent needs: pair of brake discs, new brake pads, B service and a set of rear tyres - say about £1k. Oh, and yesterday she didn't start when I turned the key. I turned the key again.....first time for everything I suppose!

Take a look at my profile I've detailed all my costs in 8 months on that. The car is due a service in May which will probably cost about £300 as I know I need some new front discs, hopefully that should give you an idea on costs per year.

I bought the car in July, which already had an S2 suspension conversion done. If your looking to buy an S1 I would factor this in to your costs as most S1's will need their suspension changing by now if they haven't been changed already

As a general rule of thumb it is best to budget approximately £1,000 per year for servicing and maintenance, although this obviously depends on how the car is driven and how often.

I drive a '99 S1 Elise everyday ... I bought the car at 31,000 miles and in 10 months the mileage now reads 48,000 miles! In that time I've spent:

Tax: £180
MOT: £200
Service(A): £600
Gear linkage repair/upgrade: £120
Soft-top refurb: £120
Bilstein suspension upgrade/Geo/rear pads: £1060
Tyres: £420
Fuel: Lots!
Insurance: Even more!

Obviously some of the stuff (e.g. the soft top) needed doing when I bought the car ... The MOT and service were high due to several faults that were most likely caused by amount of pot holes in my area! However they are worth every penny - There is no better feeling than blasting down a twisty country road, roof off, on a warm summer afternoon thumbup I also feel rather proud to own a car that has such heritage behind the badge and of course being part of an excellent and very friendly community biggrin Best thing you'll ever do!

Take into account stuff that normally you wouldnt worry about wears out an Elise.

It also depends what you use it for. Last Year I spent 8K on fixing, mods etc that does not include petrol, but then I track mine a lot.

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to post a response, I am in your gratitude. Once again much useful information has been provided which will certainly aide me in making a decision re my future purchase. Any former Command and Conquer Red Alert fans out there will know the knack of removing the 'shroud' of the unknown (costs, in this case)

Running costs do not seem to be too disimilar from the pulsar, however I feel the elise will be a more rewarding car to own.

Im planning to use the car every other day generally for fast road/b road blasts, for commuting to and from work I actually cycle. On saying that im sure once I have been bitten by the bug(elise-itis) It will be my second home, I would make a joke about about having to be surgically removed from the cockpit however I dont want to tempt fate.

once again, thanks all, you lucky lucky elise owners biggrin

From memory, cost for an S2 Sport 135 was:

Tax: £180
MOT: £50
New cat: £200
Service: £150 (at an Elise specialist)
2 rear Bridgestones: £200?
Insurance £400
Profit on sale: £900

Cost (without fuel) for the year I owned it: £280

Can't remember what I spent on fuel but I was getting about 30 mpg.

Yota 111R is £205 tax, just in case you're looking at that. I get 32-34mpg usualyl from mine. Can't comment on servicing at the moment.
