Hi, i have just picked up my new elise SC(10 days) and over the weekend i noticed that the temperature gauge seems to drop down the faster i go. When i am sitting in traffic it is 89 or 90, when i get moving again it drops down to about 75 and stays there. i would expect the opposite to happen really. it is very hard to show this to the dealer as they are in central london N1 and there is nowhere to run the car at speed nearby. has anybody on here had a similar or is it just a feature of the lotus? it only has 400 miles so i am being gentle still! thanks. madeleine.

Totally normal, when you are moving air is rammed through the radiator and the thermostat hold it at a steady temperature, in traffic the fans have to keep it cool and they don't kick in till early 90's.

Nothing to worry about

Yep, as above, totally normal, also dont panic if it runs even higher at times, high 90's even low 100's, especially if driving it hard then suddenly end up sitting idling.

One of the most common concerns over Elises almost everyone has queried at some point (me included), but nothing to worry about (99.9% of the time anyway)

Ya normal. Also I heard that when you get it onto the 2nd cam that a load of cooler oil is pumped through the system so the temperature may drop for a moment there too. I've only ever noticed it drop 1c on my 111R though..

Drop from 87-89C to around 80C quite often when on 2nd cam for short bursts - as the valves are opening more, letting more cool air in.

mine sometimes drops from 86ish to mid/low 70's when giving it some beans on the 2nd cam.

as the others have said dont worry about it. smile (only worry if it goes above 105 & the fans are not going!)

what do you think of it so far?

it is very strong at low revs, have not tired it on 6000 and more revs yet! (500 miles now) the dealer says they can check the thermos stat at 1st service, as this morning (it now)the temperature display switchs off completely. Warm to 89, then goes to 75, then switchs off completely on the A3 drive to work (cold morning). thanks. when it is serviced i make the engine as hot as hell! . Madeleine de S.

Suggest you get to the dealers with that - pronto! Especially as you said the read-out disappears completely!
