Seriosuly lacking a elise manual, what are the 2 clips behind the driver's and passenger's heads for?

Do they come off easily to release the back screen for cleaning / repair?

I think you mean the ones that take the painted roll over hoop bit off to allow you to remove totally the rear glass.

Thank Tony, are they easy enough to get on and off?

Yup. Couple of clips, the glass comes out, then put the painted roll over bit back without glass. Gruffy used to tell me that it was quite nice when driving cold witht he roof off as when you came to a stop, warm air from above the engine will move forward around your neck hehe

My good friend with an S1 doesn't do it much (if at all) - just takes off the roof, but it's worth trying to see what it feels like!

Excuse the ignorance here, but is this rear glass removal only on the s1 ?

Correct - can't do it on S2's.

From personal experience, I'd say they were added by Lotus as a novel way of removing chunks of skin from the backs of my fingers!

We tried this a couple of months ago - what it did do was make a right knotty mess of my hair because of air coming in backwards - classy!! Didn't really feel the benefits of the engine warmth - a scarf would probably be a simpler & more effective method. biggrin

No No, they devised a much better device than that - try checking the oil level on a Yota engined Exige without gardening gloves!!

Water gets into the top of the dipstick tube, dipstick sticks, the resulting, full strength, 2 handed yank drags back of knuckles across razor sharp plastic trim panel - wonderful!

I still have the scar from checking the oil over the Christmas holidays.

If you refit the roll cover without the glass in place make sure it's secure. I have heard of roll bar covers flying off because the tension on the overcentre latches is lowered when the glass is removed.

<OP worrying mode> Has anyone personally experienced the rear screen shattering? I've still got the original glass one but I understand people have replaced it with a plastic one. Are the plastic ones any good? Do they scratch?

I have heard rumours of stones flying over the top of the windscreen when the hood is off and hitting the rear glass, though I don't know anyone personally it has happened to, so I wouldn't worry. If it happens it would be bad luck but thats the time to replace with a plastic one.I bought a spare glass one off egay for £30 just because it was tinted,I thought it would look cool,-- i've still got it sitting around somewhere, unused!
