hello people,

Just had a quote from what I consider to be a good company, Sportomotive in Salisbury about a sports induction air filter kit (they say better than hurricane) and exhaust/cat bypass all fitted for £380 (inc VAT)

Does this sound good - should I be asking what it is and why it is better than hurricane?

Just after some feelings of you guys who know the car better tha I do

Thanks

What is the kit? This may help people to respond.

I belive they stock Piper Cross (X), and from what I hear they are not better than hurricanes.

Sportmotive are absoluetly superb in terms of service but they like to sell you their products. I enquired about them fitting a Larini for me and was told that they are very poor and I should buy one of their Janspeeds instead!

I declined.

Yep. Sportomotive are good for service. Never tested them on "upgrade" parts. Careful with the Cat bypass on a 111S. I have read many a thread where people have said the 111s "misses" the back pressure from the Cat and in their minds reduced performance (check SELOC for more info).

Thanks guys certainly something to chew over then

have read very good stuff about hurricanes, obviously want to get the best for my hard-earned money!

Weary of getting hurricane and fitting myself as i have extremely limited experience with these things (last time i touched an engine it was in a beetle!)

I had a quick look at how the hurricane is fitted. It looks like it would be a little fiddly as you are effectively working underneath the rear wing with quite tight access but skill wise, I don't think you could go far wrong. I guess a garage would charge a couple of hours labour so there might be a decent saving to be made.

BTW the cat by-pass is even easier to fit but only if the old bolts haven't become blobs of rust. With that in mind, getting it done at a garage could take the pain out of the procedure.

Thanks mate, they should run a "so youve become a lotus owner" course!

reading different reviews about Induction types - none more prominent than the Hurricane though!

I don't have a Hurricane (mines a K&N which works enough for me at about half the cost) but truth be told I have not heard of 1 single Hurricane owner regret their purchase... so that must say something.

For non-forced induction I believe they are held in the highest esteem (although be aware that there is maintenance associated with ownership)

Hurricane is quite easy to fit, I did mine and i'm a mechanical numpty. You can do it from inside the engine bay- i didn't remove the wheel arch liner, some folk do but I couldn't be bothered. once the old air filter housing is removed there is quite a good bit of space but thin arms are required to locate the hose onto the side duct of the S1.
I've had mine on for over 4 years and has been a great investment I think.
It's a good idea to replace the throttle body at the same time if you have the plastic one- upgrade it to a 52mm ally one if it's not already been done.

Sportomotive do indeed use the Piper Cross one - any thoughts?

I'm going the ITG route. Got one second hand off another 135R owner on SeLoc for £150.

£380 for piper cross seems expensive.

A brand new ITG kit is £300 and they're reputably the best ones?

Depends what you class as best. Its only an enclosed filter - the hurricane - same as the ITG (which I think are carbon and so more expensive?) with a filter inside. An open filter like the KN is going to suck hot air from the engine bay instead of taking cold air direct into the filter so is efficiently not as good - although sounds better !

I've had all 3 of them and for performance/vfm the hurricane is the best but its nothing special !

I'd personally just put a better filter inside the OEM box and fit some bigger ducting.

Fitting of the filters is easy - you all you do is shove it onto the TB off pipe. Hardest bit is removing the old airbox.

What did you have on the 135R?

Taking it there's not a lot of noticable difference then?

I don't think it's just the Pipercross that's £380?

Exhaust and CAT bypass too I think.

Nothing. With a de-cat and 2bular on the extra induction noise would probably have made it too loud anyway. I was going to do what I said above - get an ITG panel filter to put in the OEM filter housing and some bigger ducting but never got round to it.

I've got a hurricaine and a larini clubsport in my 135r, in all honesty they are both worth every single penny, when you first get the hurricaine and put your foot down at a low speed in a high gear you'll love it, then when you get the larini you'll spend most of your spare time looking for bridges and tunnels ... but that's another story ! wicked !

Read this for more details on the effects of the cat-bypass on VVC engines:
