Beautifully rendered Elise 111r and '96 Mk1 available to purchase and tune.

Feels pretty convincing to drive with the traction control off (otherwise no oversteer) and driving dynamics set to professional. Wide choice of Lotus colours too.

My 111r's nightfall blue!

I am SOOOOO eyeing up the GT5 PS3 kit, just for that game alone...... The screenshots look amazing. GT4 is the only reason I have a PS2!!! Not that I'm any good at it. I like the 964 RUF on the 'ring. It's hilarious trying to keep it on the black stuff.

you're not alone. most people buy the console just for one or two killer games. I only really played GT3 and 4 on the playstation. This one, is of course much better, not just the graphics which are obvisously superior in high def but a lot of work has gone into the realism of the handling. For example the elise really does handle very differently to a front drive car like the honda integra but you have to have the traction control and the like switched off to really see what they've done. Like this, the elise has a lot more oversteer than it does in real life however. The relative performance between cars is impressively well managed. You can imagine the politics between the car manufacturers! You're not having the F430 unless you make it quicker than the R8' etc.

nice surprise is an F40 in the ferrari garage although it'll be a while until I can afford one of those. So just like real life in that respect too then!

I bought GT4 and a PS2 for exactly these reasons, couldn't get me off the thing.

Then I bought a cheat disk, millions and millions of credits and I could buy anything on the game with all the mods etc etc.

Great for an hour until the novelty wore off - completely ruined the game for me and it just gathers dust nowadays.

I have got a rather good S1 Exige with 300+BHP though - bounces off the limiter at 162mph in top on the Ring straight!

I bought the PS3 for GT5 and it's probably the only game I will have on it. Other than that I now stream all my music, photos and video through it and then onto the kids PSP. Just need to get DVDs streamed to it and live TV later this year and they'll be happy.

Are you able to play PS2 games (i.e. GT4) on the PS3?

Yes, I can on my 60gb, but I did read somewhere that the 40gb doesn't. frown

I got so frustrated with the handling of the Lotus in GT5, I went out in the Exige the other night! biggrin

I won my first on-line race today in the Elise! Felt really good after many attempts which ended in being barged off the track before the finish line by one of several BMW 1 series thingies. Virtual Beemer owners are true to type then!

It's good on-line but there's still too much cheating going on. I was in the lead once when the host pulled the plug and ditched the game - really poor form. Hopefully they'll will have it sorted by the time GT5 proper comes out. That should be something.

When a few more of us get on-line we can have an Elise owners private race, with more sporting conduct I don't doubt.

How many takers have we got so far?

Is it any more realistic than the previous Gran Turismo game? I had serious trouble driving it due to some hilariously unrealistic flaws in the physics model.

yes. in fact you have a choice of physics model this time. Of course it's far from not perfect but given the limitations of pixels and joysticks it's very impressive.

However, the elise seems very unstable under braking with the settings I've got on at the moment and removing traction control has an exaggerated effect on the handling.

either way, great fun when it's snowing outside and you can't use the real thing!

What I found was that when you balance the car on turn in, if that balance is slightly towards oversteer then the oversteer just gets worse and worse until you crash. Normally, in real life or in PC sims, a little throttle and a bit less lock sorts it out, but Gran Turismo seems to take over and makes you crash confused. This is how I drive!! I can't get round the first bend confused If you tweak the rear out on the throttle it's normal, it's just under weight transfer that it's all wrong.

I also noticed that you could get an M5 up on tip toes in a 2nd gear hairpin then floor the throttle without any oversteer?! It just understeered. I'd expect a small amount of understeer followed by huge oversteer in that situation.

I'm happy with proper PC sims like GTR2 for now, but I'll try and have a go on this new Gran Turismo when I can smile

IMHO, the only proper way to play any of the Gran Turismo (and that includes Gran Turismo 5 Prolgue more so than others) is with one of the Logitech Forcefeedback Wheels. The realism is so much more authentic - something you just can't achieve with a controller.

Playing it with the wheel, it's pretty damn close and closer than just about any other game I've tried out. The Elise do have a bit of an exaggerated handling - though that also quite depends on the tyres. The tuned variant that I am using is very difficult to drive on the professional setting - enabling active-stability-management helps a lot. Traction control and ABS is completely off in my settings.

We should definately exchange some PSN ids and get a group race going! :-) There's a lot of fun to be had!

Cheers Phil

Have you not experienced the deficiencies that I've mentioned above in my post Phil? I've tried the game both with a Logitech wheel and a joypad with mushrooms and both are pretty unrealistic IMHO. I play sims on the PC regularly, so I'm used to virtual driving. In fact I regularly use GTR2 and GPL to practise on and find that it helps me in real life motor racing. Gran Turismo has just never seemed realistic at all to me.

yes I've played an early version quite extensively, but not lately. A friend of mine used to spend about 5 hours a night online racing on it eeksmile

The early version had a problem with the characteristics of the slip angles and grip, so I never got into it that much, but they may have fixed this by now.

I actually used LFS to set up my racing Metro once smile They had a hatchback on there and I was interested by a particular set of tricks I'd heard people were doing with the suspension in real life. I trialled the ideas in LFS extensively before coming up with the best settings. A week or so later, I was chatting to a very knowledgeable friend of mine, and he recommended a few settings as being the fastest for a front drive race car. It was exactly what I'd come up with in LFS! I put them on my car and won practically every race I entered from there on.

I keep meaning to try a newer version to see if that issue with the slip angles is still there.

I've heard good things about R Factor too; that's probably worth a look. Sadly, the demo is just an F1 car, and seeing how far removed that is from what I've raced in the past in real life I've no idea how realistic the sim is without forking out for the full version.

They fixed the slip angle stuff yonks ago smile

It is seriously seriously good now. Even with keyboard/mouse it is unbelievably good fun and you can really "dial in" to the handling of the car.

Unfortunately in the latest version they seem to have messed up the demo game a bit. They got rid of the RWD Turbo car. And also seemingly ruined the Saxo/106 style hatchback as it slides around everywhere now even with a good suspension setup. I'm not sure if I'm just doing something wrong with the hatchback car though... I used to be able to consitently lap the hatchback at 1:34.5 on the Blackwood track - now I can't even do one corner without sliding off :/

Also they added in a BMW Formula car which is simply awesome fun to drive.
