I'd really really really really really really love one, but are they worth it performance wise?
(dont even go down the driver training route wink )

so my car is worth approx 15 ish and a 10k conversion = 25k

I love my car to bits so a cheaper hondad s1 isnt an option !

but for 25k there are loads of cars that are awesome eg m12 or an atom or a 340r or some daft powered 7 ?

I love the idea of added reliability and a soft top ! I recon I could have it done early next year....

so what do the masses think ? and also would I be able to keep the larini in its current position ?

It will blow your mind. s1 and n/a honda conversion is what I want to do is well. Some people say they would never spend so much money on 10-15 grand car but if you love your car to bits its worth it.

Worth EVERY pennysmile

If you haven't already, you'll need to have certain upgrades to maximise the package, such as uprated suspension (Nitrons/Ohlins), upgraded brake discs & pads.

The cost for doing all of this is nearer £15K of you do it properly.

Why spend this amount on an S1 or S2 when you could go out and buy a Noble? Becuase it is just about the most fun you can have on 4 wheels. Many times cheaper to run than said Noble and the sheer level of performance is epic. You can then upgrade to a supercharger as and when you want.

For me, the N/A provides everything I want.

You have a 135R right? I've just done it and you can't compare the performance of the two frankly. Go get yourself a ride in one and you'll see what I mean. It's just in a different league altogether. Money well ermm 'invested'

Probably not tooo much to choose between a VHPD-K and a N/A honda in terms of outright grunt, the Honda's maybe MARGINALLY faster... what you DO get though is reliability with it... the Honda should give many problem-free running miles, even with a bit of track-abuse whereas the VHPD will always be a ticking time bomb. Anything sub VHPD-performance (<180bhp) will be significantly slower than a Honda.

Not true Esprit a Honda elise is a lot quicker than a VHPD engined car. (had both S1 Exige and S2 Honda)

At lower revs, from what I'm told, the VHPD is a total dog. Not so the Honda.

Back to you Noel - if you do, do it. You'll be amazed at how much quicker the car is. Literally, another level, then another. You will though need to upgrade your brakes (if you're sensible), and you will rip through tyres/pads/discs like you wouldn't believe if you track it. On road, probably a little less. Don't for a moment think you're going to be not spending on it thereafter either.

Am buying a tuned S1 myself which has almost everything done to it, such that when I'm ready to go back to Honda again (which I probably will eventually), it's ready to go.

Alls I know is that Ian Wilson's N/A Honda S1 (which is one of the more powerful N/A Honda Elises, dynoing at over 250 brake) doesn't have a lot over my VHPD in a straight line. It's certainly a little more tractable than the VHPD is, but when both are on the boil, the difference isn't as night-and-day as one might expect.

sorry, that's just wishful thinking....

at VERY best, VHPD's might make 190Bhp/140lbft vs. 220-230/160-170lbft for a bogo Honda, you cannot call that marginal...

amasing, I must not watch any more youtube vids.... as well as most of you know a beginner on the track dosn't need 220 horses but hell I want it and I want it bad !
The deal I have made for myself is, spend as much cash on boys toys as I see fit untill my 30th then Ill concentrate on the property market! so 1 year and 9 months I have then....

sound like a fair deal to me !

TBH do you want to spend £12K just to go down straights faster? Not knocking the conversion but a lot of people have them done then sell the car on soon after.

Before you groan I will mention driver training - you'll get decent lap times from spending £500 and you'll get more enjoyment out of it. Once you get bored with that, then think about whether you want an engine change.

That's numbers.... alls I know is that when the rubber meets the road on track, the Honda's not hugely faster. Sure if you're talking straight-open road, both engines on the boil in a high gear the Honda will stretch its legs.... but on your average racetrack, the extra power of the Honda doesn't seem to translate into much faster laptimes or more than a few km/h on the straights.

I'm deffo not saying the Honda is slower, it's not... but a good K will keep it in sight.... until it expires of course.

George, drive them both back to back. There are too many driver dependent aspects to comparing laptimes. Lots of LoT class A cars lap faster than class B cars in the race series. If corner exit speed is faster, the differnce of the more powerful car will not easily be noticed.

Ben Pitch one of the LoT racers went from a 210 bhp 1.9K to an NA honda in the same car and felt that the difference was vast. The power / torque is only one aspect. The different gearing on the honda gives you far more torque at the wheels.

there's no disputing that, but life isn't all about lap times and going down the straights faster is fun (and no I don't hold people up in the corners). I frequently do silly things like this just because I don't want to spend the next 15 years think what if? And just normal road driving is easier, the engine is more tractable, overtaking is a breeze, oh and then there's the noise..... driving
