Hello People

It's not something i've really considered at all, but I was reading EVO today and it occured to me that there are probably a lot of people who want to own a beast of some description but can't afford it at the time they want to. Has anyone ever considered some manner of time-share type of ownership. It would work quite well I reckon. I mean I know no-one really wants to share their car with anyone else, but hears a two pronged question really: To those of you who already have a beast, would you have considered this route if it had been offered prior to yhour eventual full ownership, and to those of you who don't currently own a mschine, would you go this route???

and of course by beast/machine i refer to a car you desire as opposed to put up with.

isnt that what Supercar clubs are like already ? ...you dont have to pay 10K per year for the top end ones, there are others that are just a few grand a year for cars in the 30-50K range ..similar to the running costs of and Elise if type car

Well Mr Bogie I completely see your point, but that's not quite what i was getting towards.

When I get up of a Sunday morning that I'm not forced to go into work I like almost nothing more than wandering downstairs, grabbing a cup of coffee and reading a tattered car mag or maybe that months copy of Home and Housebuilding magazine. I don't wake up have a cup on the way out and think "my, what a nice day, wouldn't it be fun to stand in Smiths for an hour and read the best bits from this months Performance Car Magazine"!.

I agree totally with car clubs but not only is there not a personal connection with what you're driving because there's no sense of ownership, but you get no say in its nurturing, it's health and well being. If you and the missus decided to start a family, you wouldn't go the whole 9 months, drop it out and then give it to a storage facility to look after for the week so you could then have the convenience of just having it at weekends.

I know part ownership doesn't pull exact parallels to some of the things i've mentioned here, but I thin k it would be a more personal experience. A bunch of people who might not even know each other at all, sharing a personal experience as opposed to a hydrogenated one!

I wouldn't be so sure - if I won the lottery it would be a miracle as I don't play it...er, sorry, if I won I wouldn't start speccing a garage, I'd probably buy 1 or maybe at a stretch 2 cars. Probably something indulgent like an M5 or something that does the whole everyday ownership thing.

Then I'd join a supercar club. Why buy a Ferrari and then think "hold on, is the Lambo any good, or how about a Zonda?". Or worse still, spend nearly a million on a stable of supercars, and then another few thousand a year on keeping them? All for, what, 500 miles a year each?

I see no difference in 5 people sharing a car or 50 people doing this - it's the driving experience you want, not the pain of repairs.

In fact, I'm tempted to do something similar this year. I can't afford a Supercar Club membership but I could do with a practical car. Rather than spend £2K on a Fiesta, then a few hundred on insurance, another 150 on tax, a couple of hundred more on maintenance, I'm thinking of spending £50 to join the Streetcar Club, then £5 an hour whenever I need boot space. The other bonus is I don't have to shift cars round whenever I use the Elise.

Check out 12thshare.

ETA: It appears that 12th share has disappeared and it redirects to Ecurie. Thus, I can only assume they tried it, and it didn't work.
