Avon ZZ3 tyre ?
Discussion
I have, S1 Type 49 Rear wheel size: 225/45 16
Currently still has the Pirelli P-Zero on, the garage which maintains it, recommended Avon ZZ3 tyre rather than what I was intending to purchase, though they have nothing to gain as they will not be supplying them!
Also a friend rates Avon (in his case though that is on two wheels, however anything that keeps him on the road has got to be quality!!!)
Though reading down through the forum I don’t see them mention, which makes me think must be a reason there not!
Has anyone tried them?
Is there issue why they can’t be used?
The price makes me suspicious!
Anyway here’s Manufacturer's Description:
Avon ZZ3 Size: 225/45YR16 Speed: Y Load: 89
Ultra-high performance tyres for sport orientated cars.
Superb wet weather grip
Excellent dry road holding
Very predictable on-the-limit handling characteristics
Rim flange protector to guard your expensive alloy wheels against kerbing damage
Speed Index: ZR
Lots of ultra-high performance tyres give strong levels of road holding, but the ZZ3 combines that talent with very gentle and predictable breakaway characteristics as you approach the limits of its grip; this gives drivers plenty of advanced warning that it's time to slow down and therefore a great feeling of confidence in their ZZ3s. And for skilled drivers in a racetrack environment, this predictability allows them to drift their car around corners at and beyond the limit of the tyres' grip. This is achieved through careful management of how the ZZ3's inner carcass and tread blocks behave in extreme lateral load situations, and thanks to a specially formulated rubber compound. That rubber formulation also contains a high silica content for improved wet weather road holding - the ZZ3's distinctive arrow-head tread pattern and deep grooved shoulder blocks also help in this respect. As a further aid to the ZZ3's handling properties, its central circumferential rib promotes swift turn-in to corners.

maybe they dont do matching fronts? ..usually thats the first problem with finding tyres for an Elise..I take it you intend on fitting 4 matching tyres ! ?
...do yourself a favour and get rid of the P-Zeros !
I would stick to something tried and tested on the Elise myself - most regular car tyres are designed for cars that weigh 2x the Elise so dont work so well funnily enough. And just remember - tyres are what keep you on the road, another £50 spent could save your life...never scrimp on tyres and brakes IMO
the SELOC techwiki has a whole page with every tyre tried on there http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Tyres
I think the best option (also most expensive) for an S1 are Yokohama Advan Neova, and a budget option would be Toyo T1-R or Kumhos

As Bogie says, I doubt you'd get fronts in the correct size. The tyres themselves are ok, nothing special. I had a set on my BMW and they were more than adequate for a budget tyre but that's it. Go for Kumho Ecsta KU31's if you're after a really good budget tyre. Bet they're cheaper as well.
The LTS Advans are still regarded as the dogs for the S1.
'Budget' flavour of the month is the Kumho and the Toyo T1-Rs are OK although the Toyos aren't don't last long on track and take a fair while (I reckon 1k miles) to properly bed in. I wouldn't mix and match tyres on the Elise. I've binned two sets of perfectly good fronts as the matching rears were no longer available.
Overdue are the new Toyo R1-R which look very interesting. Won't be out till late this year or early next year though so I'll very soon be buying a set of T1-R rears or binning another set of perfectly good fronts and getting a full new set of Kuhmos or Advans.

Thanks all of you for your replys, I would say all of the above pretty well sums it up !!!
Yea been wanting to get rid of the P-Zero's, they were on it when I bought 6 months ago, thought best get sum wear out of them before hand, the car has only 20K on the clock, so couldn't really be to unhappy abouty the tyres which came with it !!!!!!!!!!
Going to go with what I first decided, the Yoko's makes the best sense !!
Many thanks, stay lucky,
JB
