Need to change all 4 tyres on my S1.

The wheels are the 111S type (and therefore *should* have 225/45/16 + 195/50/15 tyres)but currently have 205/50/16 + 185/55/15 tyres fitted.

Im getting the Kumho KU31's, now the fronts are easy to get hold of, but the rear, 225/45/16, are on back order everywhere and it will be weeks until i can get some.

Now what I'm thinking of doing, to ensure I can get some tyres soon, its get the Kumho's in the same size I have now... 205/50/16 + 185/55/15..

That size "seems" ok on the car at the mo, but then again I havnt driven it with the correct size on..

So do I need to wait for the 225/45's? or are the 205's still sposed to be reasonable on the 111s wheel?

sorry for the long-winded question!!

IIRC the S1 111s had wider rear tyres (225/45/16) but the same fronts (185/55/15) as standard.
I guess they did that to tame the oversteer nature that frightened the owners of the original S1.

If you drive the car on the road and you like its handling then why not stick to the size you use now?wink

well thats what I was thinking...

I dont feel like I "need" wider tyres at the back. But was just under the impression that the tyre would work much better on the 111s wheel in 225/45 size..

The 205's do look a little stretched over the wheel... but seems to grip well enough!?! :-)

To an extent chadders it all depends on the tyre you are fitting. Some tyres of apparantly the same size are wider than others!
As an alternative to the Kuhmos you could fit Toyo T1-Rs.
When I first fitted them I hated them but give them a thousand or so miles and they settle down and are great for road use with very good wet/mucky weather grip.
If you want the best for your car then go to a Lotus dealer and fit Advans.

Dont fancy the toyos for a couple of reasons, I think the kumho is still quite a good tyre, especially for the price! there practically free!

Spose there's no way of telling which are slightly wider/narrower without seeing them side-by-side....

Why bodge one of the most important aspects of the cars handling and dynamics just to get something to fit? The tyre/road interface is integrally important, so either get tyres in the correct fitment, or don't get them at all.

T1R's aren't that terrible once bedded in, but if money's no object, get the Advans and be delighted. Well worth the additional expense.

well thats my question really... are 205s correct on the 111s rims, or do they have to be 225's?

Lotus recommends 225's. They know a lot more about this than I do, so I'm inclined to take their advicewink

managed to find the 225/45/16's at mytyres.co.uk, they are massively overpriced but they have been the only people able to get them at the moment (based in germany not UK)

Also ordered the fronts from camskill (195/50/15) think they were £33 each.
Heard the 195/50/15 size can foul on the arches sometimes? just hoping this is not true as plenty of people seem to run them..

Probably only if you're running a seriously low ride height.

Doesn't the 111S have a different clam to allow for the wider fronts?
Anyway, I've been running 195 fronts for a couple of years now and have had now issues at standard ride height although I can scrape the arches on track since changing the suspension (front riding at 100mm). Nothing worth worrying about though.

its not a 111s, but had the wheels fitted from new as an option. So has the std front clam, and std ride height.
Sounds like I dont have to worry though, cheers TIPPER
