as per the title really. I'm gutted at the thought of it. frown

basically the wife's preggers ( smile ) and due in october.

she / we need a 'proper' family car as the elise can't really be described as that and she's got an old 2 door polo - was interesting trying to get a buggy in the boot in monthercare car park!

managed to convince the wife that I could keep the elise if I got her the family car - that went well and shes happy with her budget and the cars in there. so she'll have the family car for everyday use & i can keep mine as its usually only me in it anyway.

However we're also looking to have an extension done on the house starting in August and family car + extension + baby doesn't look good on the finances.

i'm just thinking, musing, um'ing and ah'ing at present but i'm so attached just the thought is terrifying.

anyone else been through similar thoughts / situations and managed to come out the other side?

Could the POLO be traded for a, say 3 - 4 year old Mondeo or similar, if finances are an issue you can't get cheaper than a second hand Laguna! may even get cash backsmile

thinking of trading the Polo for a soft roader (Rav4 / Tucson / Sportage etc..), with a budget of 8k or so. Mrs want the better ride height & hates the mpv / people carriers so these make sense from a boot space / height pov. got her to sit in a mates scenic at the weekend. she didnt like.

When the twins were on the way I sold the Esprit which I was gutted about at the time. However when the little ones came along it more than made up for the loss of the Lotus and I did not even think of if. I got an MG in exchange and it was useful to have a car I could carry little ones in. Now the twins are a bit older I have gone back to Lotus and I think it may be true what they say about abstinence makes the heart grow fonder as it I really enjoy the new Lotus, as do the offspring.
So dont worry about the car, you can always get another and children are priceless.

Man talks sense. The sprog will make up for everything particularly after the first few months when you really start getting responses from it (as opposed to sh*t and vomit). Best toy a man can have.

I did something very similar beacuse of my munchkins in a round about sort of way.

Sold my brand new 111R and ended up with an 06 Sport Racer and 05 Meriva for the same price plus a couple of £k back. Granted there was a Saab conertible thrown in the mix somewhere in the middle but the NET outcome was the same.

For carrying nippers about and all the luggage that comes with them and also for using when you dont want to drive the lotus i have found the Meriva to be superb, well specced and available at very good prices.

SIL and BIL have a Meriva for their two little ones, quite impressed with what they can fit in it, quite nice inside as well.

Why not trade the Elise in for another cheaper model ?

You could sell a 111r for around 18-19k & buy a decent similar spec 111s for around 13-14.

Free's up about 5-6k for your extension & lets you have a newish Lotus with similar performance.

As said before... your R will be worth plenty, you could get a decent family car and an S1 or S2 with a bit of money left over.

Many have gone from toyota cars to K series... and had nagging doubts about reliability, I did it and my S1 has done 20k in 9 months with barely a hiccup. Might be worth setting a bit of money aside as a reserve fund tho, just in case

You can still get your kicks and have a happy Mrs.... best of both worlds!

If it helps, think of the new practical family car as a "reproduction response vehicle". biggrin

I bought my elise 5 days after the birth of our second child. We have had the elise and a Renault for 4 1/2 years without issue. You only need one prctical car.

I used to have a 2007 Elise R. I wanted a change to something more hardcore, and quite frankly too, needed to own a less expensive car (currently being bled by a st BTL investment which is haemmorraging me to the tune of £300 per month).

I sold my S2 and bought an S1 Sport 160. Apart from being a far, far more enjoyable driving tool than my S2 R, its cheaper to own. VED is cheaper, so is insurance and if I look after her well any depreciation is likely to be pretty minimal.

The rub is this: I can more easily justify owning a £13000 toy as a second car than a £23000 one.

Perhaps look at buying a nice S1? K-series VVC powerplants give good mpg and have cheapish road tax.

thanks guys, have started to mull over the thought of getting into a cheaper liz......is making the tranision a bit more bareable!

will give mine a proper wash & polish and get an advert up on pistonheads in the next couple of weeks & see how things go.

as for prices whats the general feeling for a bull park figure for a ardent red R with 15-16k on the clock stage 1 & a piper x induction kit? I'm thinking 20-21?

Seems a realistic ball park to me. Obviously the sports car market is a little depressed compared to this time last year. On the flip side, that means you may also be able pick up a really nice S1 up for sensible money. smile

As a second car, I reckon you will really enjoy the rawness of an S1 compared to your 111R.

I may sound like a shallow sod, but I would be quite depressed if I was without an Elise, or indeed a comparable sports car as a toy. I just love driving and cars too much.

Price it realistically if you want to sell quickly and consider doing a PX with someone who has a nice S1 who's looking to trade-in for a 111R. You never know!
