Gentleman (and ladies)
What needs to happen for a 2ZZ engine to go on cam?

ie -
Correct reading from temp sensor,
Oil bypass valve activated

etc

Assuming it works like VTEC in the Honda powerplants the speed also needs to be above a certain value as well as oil pressure (for those with a VTEC oil pressure sensor..the JDM versions doesn't have it). Also the intake manifold vacuum and/or TPS sensor needs to be above a certain limit.

Correct temp on temp sensor for at least 10mins.
Not about to go into a bend as you go on-cam
No nearby Rozzers

I take it this means they haven't found the problem yet? banghead

You must be incandescent by now. Bad luck. You can borrow mine if you are having withdrawal - I now have Shannon's old shed as a daily hack when needed.

TPS sensor is an interesting idea but the yota has a sensor on the cam shaft to tell it engine speed so I dont believe the TPS will have a influence on switchover.

Oil pressure sensor and temp sensor have been ruled out as has ECU fault....

TPS most certainly has an influence. Below a certain amount of throttle the 2nd cam will not get activated (assuming once again it's similar to a Honda)

I wasn't talking about engine speed, but vehicle speed. Although engine rpm also is a factor. It could be something like this:

  • vehicle speed above 20 km/h
  • oil pressure above 6 bar
  • water temp above 70 deg C
  • engine rpm above 6000
  • intake manifold pressure above 600 mbar ( above 70% throttle)
Not exact numbers, but it's just to give an idea of how many criteria needs to be met for it to activate 2nd cam.

Maybe there is a shoddy connection on the temp sender/connectors etc that keeps 'resetting' the 10 min timer?

Chris

/also read about a dodgy fuse that blows and that disables the 2nd cam...

I remember a chap in Scottishelises having 2zz trouble when the number 6 fuse in the engine bay on his exige blew. It stuck 'on cam' at all times, so ran like a pile of ste. Apparently this was due to low oil. Perhaps something similar has happened, the No6 fuse has blow and stuck your car off cam. I have no idea when it comes to the electronics aspect of car stuff.

Oil pressure or oil level

Honda VTEC engines wont go into vtec if the oil is low, maybe they're the same.
