Turbo Desiel Elise
Discussion
Actually there's a project here in Denmark to build a turbo diesel elise for racing
It's going to have a tuned peugeot HDI engine (210hp and I can't remember the torque..Lots..).
Going to be interesting to see how it turns out. It should be ready for the next race of the season which is August 17th

Whats the point when the petrol Honda conversion is available? I fail to see why people obsess about MPG in a Lotus. Its a sportscar for f
ks sake! I suspect would also be very difficult to control that big whoomp of torque if it kicks in on the exit to a corner.
Ahh but an eco warrior track day weopon with torque to slide about lots would be great fun

Ok well you dont have to buy it and it certainly wouldn't be for everyone.
ks sake! I suspect would also be very difficult to control that big whoomp of torque if it kicks in on the exit to a corner. Think we've had this "no to diesels resistence" thing for about 15 years, kicking and screaming please not in a jag etc yet now 75% of jags are now D's (It's ok they are still available as P's!).
Now the "last refuge" sports cars have to be high revvy fizz pots apparently, but every tester that drives the SC says it is great and much better thanks to big torque low down, likewise fast fords!
Newgen D's have smooth torque so no unhappy surprises mid corner, which cant always be said of VVT. People obsess about MPG more than depreciation, even though depreciation costs more, because you pay every week and it feels more.
Now with the reality of CO2 based taxation in the UK market, MPG is even more important for Depr.

I bought my exige as a weekend blasting car and for track days. For me, that means revs. A diesel is all about low down torque and running out of puff at high RPM-even the modern ones share this trait although it has mellowed a little. I really don't think you can compare a Jag repmobile with a dedicated sports car like a Lotus. Get back to me when Ferrari bring out their next diesel car. Take a look at the torque/BHP figures of the SC Elise/Exige - the torque is still way below the BHP. I'm sorry but for true performance cars its still about BHP, not torque. I don't think MPG affects Lotus depreciation TBH.

Diesel, good as they are getting, are still as dull as dishwater...
look at Le-Mans, the dismals sound s
t, they have no charicter, 10 years time, nobody will recount the sound of the dismal as it went down Mulsanne, etc etc...
owning a sportscar is supposed to be all about the experiance as much as anything else, yet you want to turn that into a eco-bore box?
reminds me of the dismal R8 Audi made, what's the point? who is their right minds would buy one? you don't buy a Ferarri and care about it's MPG do you?

But the kind of people who buys Audis do so because they are in fashion, it's currently fashionable (in some circles) to buy something economical, so the R8 Diseasel wins on both counts.
LOL!I have an Audi, but I can assure you it had nothing to do with fashion!
That said, I do get your point, (and dispare that people are that sad)

Low MPG is good and the Elise does very well here already (K series, sorry it did well;) TDs surely are not proper pure fun and not best for small sports cars.
Mind you look at the current Seat touring car. Thats a TD and is doing well. Plato says is just so different to driving the petrol and the waft of torque is great out of corners. Dont get me wrong, I love a high reving engine but would love to see what a high power TDI elise would be like. Someone in the elise trohpy should give it a go...... those boys will try anything once..."The wall of torque" gives you an illusion the car is faster than it really is. You want power to accelerate, not a torque spike (unless you want to spin the wheels), probably delayed anyway. I believe the best TD engines are quite good (BMW I'm guessing) but ones I have driven (Polo, Panda, Astra) were horrible.

exactly...if dismalls are so great, why is it ACO have let them run bigger engines with turbo's in the same class as NA petrol engined cars?
