Just looking for personal opinion (and we aren't short of that on here are we? ;-)

My subscription to Road Angel has expired and was wondering wether to renew or go for a sat nav system with built in traffic camera alerts. I currently do not have a sat nav, so duplication is not an issue, but the added funcionality of a combined device looks appealing.

So, what's the 'weapon of choice' in this war against the scamera?

thanks

I had an RA1 and an RA2 in the past and also ran a Garmin sat nav. Last year I wanted to combine to 1 unit. My priority was a camera detector and secondary concern was the sat nav so I wanted a make that was focussed on the former and hence avoided TomTom etc and looked at the RA Navigator, the Snooper Syrius or the Pogo.

I went for the RA Navigator and have kicked myself ever since. Garbage, left mes stranded numerous times and generally not very impressed.

I think to be honest I would go for a Tomtom europe and just upload the camera database. Thankfully these days the rate at which new cameras are going up seems to have slowed a little so updates arent quite so frantic. The Tomtom is so well prescribed now I would imagine that the database has moved a long way on from those of old that were uploaded by users compared to the more accurate databases of the road angel/snooper etc companies which is where their advantage lay in terms of accuracy.

I switched from a Road Angel to using a Garmin for nav and camera alerts. For a month I ran the two in tandem and the sat nav didn't miss any cameras. Unlike a lot of units, it's also directional, like the Road Angel.

Plus if you go for the top end units they have bluetooth and an MP3 player - plug into your stereo via the headphone socket/aux in and you have handsfree (which really does work in an Elise), directions and music through the speakers. Have a look for the Nuvi 760, it's a brilliant unit and you can pick it up for little more than a couple of hundred these days.

We use an Snooper Indago snp-1000, its a couple of years old now but with European Maps and regular Saftey(?) Camera updates it has never let us down at home or abroad. When I drop it and damaged it Snooper sent me a replacement within a week. The only time it wouldnt play ball was at the top of Stelvio, but as the only way was down it wasnt much of a problem!
