Magazine Subscriptions
Discussion
Recently subscribed for 3 issues of Evo at a cost of £1, now i am too old for Roy of the Rovers it is time i subscribed to something more adult (not too adult though
)and was wondering what is the best car mag out there?
The first edition of Evo i received featured the Evora and the free gift was a British Supercars magazine with loads of Lotus reviews in it. So quite happy with that. Waiting for the October issue stil.

well, for petrolheads youve really got eerrmmm...Evo, Evo and errrmm ...Evo...which basically replaced Performance Car of yesteryear.
All the rest are either consumer related like Which Car etc or TV related like the Top Gear Magazine (good for a read on the plane, but I wouldnt subscribe) ..oh and Car - which is like the Fith Gear to Top Gear Mag - an alternate view on the same news
Oh and then the weeklies, Auto Expres - mmmm... seems like a cheaper rip off of the original Autocar, which in istelf is not bad for a weekly rag, as long as you dont read toooo much into the scoops and 'exclusive' pics (like made up in Photoshop)
Me, well I have a lot of time on my hands right now, so actually ended up (after the cheap offers) with Evo and Autocar subscriptions ....but Practical Performance Car is also cool IMO - the rest I just read oppotunistically if im on a 10 hr flight etc

Evo
Have been subscribed for about a year now. Found the writing to be very descriptive, meaning that you felt really ' involved ' in whatever the subject was. Also liked the format and, if photography s your thing, you won't be disapointed either. By way of a comparision, I took a copy of TopGear and Performance Car with me on a recent holiday and was disapointed by both and won't be buying them again.

Octane is OK also. Its a sister publication of Evo but features sporty Classic Cars. Just a wee bit Pipe & Slippers although I have resubcribed at a special offer price of £12 for a year.
Another is the relaunched Performnce Car magazine which also looks high quality (haven't read it) and features more attainable cars than the carnography in Evo.

I'd have to say Octane gives a better read than evo. Personally i think evo has gove down hill in over the last few years to the point where i now think it's overpriced considering the content.
I'd also recommend Practical Performance Car. Bloody interesting with good tech & diy articles, and a rover SD1 project with an aero engine!

I've been an Evo subscriber since issue 1 but I'm starting to think about a change. I just feel they've run out of ideas a little and there is less and less each month that is of interest to me. Performance car looked promising but I don't find it a great read. Octane seems pretty good but is very much aimed at pockets beyond mine. I bought Classic and Sportscar for the first time this month, mainly because it had an S1 Elise group test and I have to say it was an interesting read. To be honest there isn't a great deal of content, as most of the mag is adverts but the cars being advertised are pretty interesting in themselves. I'm going to buy a couple more and see what they're like and then maybe switch my allegiance.
There are a few Internet based e-zines coming about at the moment.
Have a look at www.drivers-republic.co.uk
Very good with Dickie Meaden(ex Evo), Jethro Bovingdon(ex Evo) and the legend that is Chris Harris(Autocar).
It's worth it just to watch Chris's Video, really informative and his petrolhead-ness really comes across.
Also it's FREE!!!!
