I have got an S1 which is decatted and has a sports exhaust, so its nice and loud!
Am thinking about an induction kit. DO I need this as well? If so, which kit? Hurricane?

no you dont "need" one ...but it will make it sound even louder and deeper on full throttle, and maybe give a couple of bhp

hurricane is a good quality VFM option...well proven and sound nice. You can get some cheaper ones, and you can get an ITG carbon jobbie for twice the price, but basically any closed filter with a foam or fabric cone will do the same job so dont spend too much

I went for the "PiperCross" cold air induction kit & was very impressed with it. Supplied & fitted by sportomotive in Salisbury.

I'm gonna be getting an induction kit at some point. Will definately be the hurricane.

But with the way things are at the mo, im struggling to justify £170 for something i dont really need at the mo!!

Have a look at car builder solutions, they have a box for £40 and comes with ducting and they do some nice inlet trumpets, could get it all done for £60 ish, the difference between the pricey ones and this in performance would be next to nothing and spend the change on some brake pads.

Decat sounds chavy (no offence to chavs). Inducion kit sounds racey. Sure you need it.

Just amke sure you don't LOSE power but gain noise after fitting it.... Some of the claims of the air filter manufacturers are slightly dubious if you do a back to back dyno test...

If you value your hearing then be careful with some of the cone-filter-in-a-box jobs that are too close to the bulkhead, they can resonate so fking badly that you *need* to wear earplugs or you'll have to crawl out of the car with your ears bleeding.

With an S1 you can drown out the exhaust note with the induction as it's closer to you and can set up resonance in the tub, and IMO the induction blare of a K series is viciously unpleasant compared to a nice zorst on the same engine.

Be careful you don't just get a painful wall of noise and no discernible power gain (or worse, power loss). Make sure you're ducting cool air to the new filter or you'll just scoop hot air out of the engine bay and go slower...

Not true.

S1 with CAT sounds like a sewing machine.

My car with De-CAT, Janspeed and induction sound pretty composed at low speed / cruising but sounds like a "real" sports car when you give it the beans!

Just how it should sound and totally suits the car.

To me, an exhaust only sounds chavy when it's out of place. i.e a nova sounding like an Enzo would sound chavy.

It's not to do with the cat. I have my cat back now and it still sounds great at high revs without the airbox, but with the original airbox sounded like you said. I have tried all 4 combinations (Cat(With/Without), Airbox(With/Without), and have just the K&N filter "induction" (and the VVC engine if that makes a difference).

Thanks for all the advice. At the moment my car is de-catted and has a Janspeed sports exhaust. I'm tempted to fit a Hurricane indiction kit although as one of the previous posters has said I don't want to go deaf!

just one small thing to remember before splashing out ...its a 1.8 4 pot Rover K series or Toyta engine ...commonly found in shopping cars.

No matter how expensive your exhaust/induction kit and whether you have a cat or not ...it will always sound like a louder version of a 4 pot 1.8 engine ...just the same as those Rovers, Vauxhalls and Fords sound with they lap the local carpark in the evening ...no fancy exhaust is going to make it sound like an Aston or Ferrari V12 wink

A friend is going back to a standard airbox as he is really suffering the noise and makes it pretty much impossible to speak in the car and believes he going deaf now...........

Interesting read... does anyone use the standard airbox with a K&N filter replacement. No mention of sports cat yet? are these used much with a good exhaust system?

Yep, I just have a standard K&N panel in my 111's and the sports exhaust.Doesn't feel any different to the clean filter it replaced and no real noisier.I notice that Raceline do a 'modded' airbox, so might look at taking mine out and making some logical adjustments to get more cold air in and change the concertina hose on the box to TB to a smooth silicon one.

I had a sports cat on my K engine and then Honda later one, more expensive than a decat pipe of course, but no hassle every year, similar power gain, a bit more noise but not too much

after 6 years in an Elise, 83K miles, 2 engines and 5 exhausts, I ended up with a big back box, designed to keep a 330bhp Honda quiet at 8000revs, but still not restrictive plus a sports cat ...was the best it ever was...low noise at idle and near factory when cruising, but a nice howl on full throttle smile
