Guys having picked up an N/A S2 Exige about a month ago on a bit of a whim, I am really enjoying it. The character is so different to the much heavier and powerful Porsches I am used to, most notably the engine on 2nd cam is fantastic, but as I feared the torque is a bit lacking low down.

I am going to test a supercharged car when I get some time as a comparison, but I love the one I bought and would rather not change. I won't be puttting on an after market supercharger, but wondered if there are any proven sensible engine upgrades such a good remap which can help the modest low down torque
Cheers

Just about the only thing you can do is an ECU reflash that will smooth out and lower the cam change point. Various people doing it for £250+VAT upwards. After that induction, manifold and exhaust combined with a "GT" reflash from Hangar 111 claim a bit more power but will be >£1500 to do on a standard car.

I've already gone the induction/exhaust route so will be going for the GT spec reflash in the new year some time. Other than forced induction of one sort or another there doesn;t seem to be a lot about for a N/A car. You can get different cams etc but all the gains seem very minimal for a lot of cash compared to strapping a SC on it.

I would just save up for one of the aftermarket SC kits like the Katana, and get more than the factory offering for less cost

I am going to drive an 'S' but don't favour an aftermarket. I had one on my 911 (993) from a well known Porsche tuner in Warrington and really didn't like it at all. Opinion is divided on this amongst Porsche folk - in fact its polarised!

If I like the 'S' that much I'll trade up, but wondered if anything else is worth it.

The idea of channig the map to bring the second cam in at 5K ish would be good, but I do like that step change!

The cam remap only lowers it to 5700 so only 500rpm lower. If you do go for an S then it opens up a few options for tuning with bigger injectors and a map which can boost power quite a bit, reports of 245+hp for £1500.

The opinion on the Katana is, to my knowledge, so far undivided in being 100% poistive from those that have had it done. It may be worth looking on SELOC for more opinions and talking to Sinclaires who do the kit. You don't need me to tell you you'll be taking a double depreciation hit if you chop in the NA and then get an S. You'd probably see 1/2 the price of the Katana back if you sold it on. This is the route I'll be going at some point on my NA. I have the lowered cam point (Lotus version) and it comes in at 5750. You still get the kick but it's slightly more subtle and does make the car more drivable.

hehe

Yup, I had the same conversion on my last 993 and loved it... and am picking up a Exige S in a few days time... biggrin

If you love the 2nd cam screamer character then don't go for the S - it still spins round to 8200 rpm but doesn't feel anywhere near 'peaky'.

But like everyone says, there's not a lot more to be had out of the N/A Toyota lump without sacrificing reliability - after all, unlike the K series cars the Toyota engine is already pushing out more than 100 bhp/litre in standard trim. Getting a lot more than that whilst remaining a 'road' engine with adequate reliability is asking a hell of a lot...

My issue with the S2 NA exige, when I went with chequebook in hand to buy one, was that it felt absolutely gutless in the midrange. I can't see any map / mods bar forced induction changing that enough for you to notice for more than a week.

Thanks chaps - much as I imagined - I'll try to get a ride in a re-mapped NA and test a Sc240 but to be honest I'm pretty happy with the one I've got.

Get a Katana fitted for a fraction of the cost of upgrading to an S240. There are hundreds of Katana conversions now in both the US and Europe. The Katana can be installed or removed in a day so its not like you have to keep it supercharged forever if you want to sell. It runs at 6.5 psi boost so its not like your putting a lot of strain on the engine. You'll get 160lb of torque and well over 250bhp which will outrun an Exige S or S240 anyday of the week. You'll also keep the car your attached to
