S2 111S best induction kit ??

Hi everyone, Okay maybe this is an old subject, done & dusted, but after some serious investigations i'm still not decided, so best to ask the bible = 'Pistonhead Lotus forum'.
Okay so I have a very nice 111S, 2002, K series lump. For the induction kits, what's the verdict? I know this car will never have the sound of a V8, or at best the nice dry tone I had on my 2.8 Capri (with full janspeed), before I flogged it for the Elise. Always nice going through tunnels, in the 2.8 (memories). Anyway back to the Lotus. I have found Hurricane, Various Piper kits, K&N 57i, & the Apollo type (looks nice in black). ITG, kit a lot of people rave on about, and the rice burner, from Moto-build (based on a Piper, from what I have read).
My main points, are the sound, value for money. Talking 160quidish, up to just under 300, for ITG. Another point is I see some have a lead pipe drawn in from the side vent, and others like the Hurricane, just have a small lead pipe (maybe I'm not totally correct).
I have done the rounds on U-tube for the sounds, so that's covered, concerning Hurricane. So far I'm thinking to go for the Hurricane (seems a firm favoutite), but interested about the Apollo 57A 6030. What does that sound like? These two being about the same price (more or less). But then again the ITG kit is supposed to be the bees knees, and with a +8BHP advantage (not so sure it's that much) !!! What's the verdict on induction kits, then?

I have a 120BHP K-Series S2 which runs a Pipercross Viper induction kit and a Janspeed Sports exhaust and this sounds great as well as passing the noise limit for trackdays (93dBA @ 4000RPM). I had the car from new in standard form and drove it for about 2000 miles before I added the exhaust and induction kit in stages. The exhaust definitely made the car sound better as well as rev easier and the induction kit added more of an induction roar - well there's a surprise! It always used to struggled to rev past the 6000RPM in standard form whereas now it bounces off the rev limiter at around 6750RPM, so in conclusion it breathes a lot easier. As to the cheaper induction kits sorry I can't help as I have never tried them!
I had an ITG fitted to my Sport 160 back in June. Pricey swines they are. I'm a notoriously tight-fisted bugger, but when it comes to the Elise, I tend to come over all lavish. 
My car was very loud to start with having been de-catted plus the addition of a sports silencer and 340R manifold. Popped, banged even spat the occasional small flame on overrun.
Post-ITG? Minimal difference at low rpm / light throttle openings but the car sang even louder than before above 5,000rpm on a hard throttle. Still bangs and splutters and pops.
The car sounds so bloody good, i'm planning on a little run up to London very late tonight after midnight to seek out some tunnels.
I don't notice any more power, but Sinclaire's (who fitted it) reckon the ITG may be good for a few more horses. Must say it looks good when the engine cover is lifted, too.
I'm led to believe the Hurricane (which is probably better value) is a touch louder than the ITG, with a more metallic, 'raspy' sound.

ITG is the pick of the bunch if it's money-no-object.
Re: London tunnels, get down around the London Bridge Tooley St. area for some classic ones through the arches. You'll get a flash of the London "nightlife" down there too if you're unlucky. Just don't stop or the rozzers may think you're a punter!

You missed a really good SELOC run on Sunday, Tim. 

The combination of a cold night and it being Monday should ensure quiet roads.
Didn't know it was known as a red-light area.
Some seriously dodgy nightclubs under the arches around there, though. The drugged-up chav s
gs would come into the Underground station as we opened on Sunday morning at 7:30am. Once on the platforms, fags would be lit. Saw a couple of the b
hes drop their kegs and urinate in full view of the cameras on more than one occasion.

There's at least 5 tunnels that run under London Bridge mainline station.

Started on about induction kits, then lead onto a more cultured subject about tunnels, dodgey nightclubs, and pissing in the street. Well bloody good forum this is for all kinds of stuff. No problem always an interesting read !!!

The next question is about de-cat pipe. The car is a S2 111S, so has the VVC engine. I read somewhere, no real gain to loose the de-cat concerning power improvements, as the VVC engine was conditioned, and needs the resistance of the original cat. Any thoughts on that? Then I think I'm sorted for the mo.

I was sorry to miss it, felt rotten the day before (Xmas cold) and couldn't face a long day in the car (despite the fact that it's now a comfortable GT with a big lazy V6!). Hopefully in the new year I'll be allowed to tag along 

The decatting a VVC engine is a bit of a grey area. There was some testing done on a MG with a VVC and different exhaust system to the elise. There's a bit more info on it on seloc.
I've decatted my s1 111s and I must say I like the sound of it more than before. Either way, you wouldn't miss 1 or 2 bhp....it's all about personal preference.

I saw that article on the MGF, for decat pipes. Just got back from 'Garage Performance Engine', website = http://www.performans-engine.com/ , here in Le Mans. Frédéric's the guro, for amongst others Caterhams, jags, Lotus, Porsche, Triumphs. A little plug, for him but a kind bloke and very helpful too. Had a coffee with him just now, and he confirmed only 2 options for the VVC engine. 1) Leave well alone the original cat, or 2) Install a Sports cat. Forget the decat pipe altogether.

One last point for the ITG induction kit. Available with aluminum or carbon fiber filter container. The price a bit more for the carbon fiber version. What baffles me is okay we know all about carbon fiber weight, ratio, tensle strength etc, yet aluminum ain't bad. Also aluminum is one of the best conductors, so great for a heat sink to disapate the heat. I would guess better than carbon fiber concerning this point. Anyone ever considerred this? The weight difference for the carbon fiber / aluminum would be marginal surely at any rate. The price is nearly 90 quid difference though. What's the verdict out there on that front?
seeing as the difference between the worst and best induction kits on an Elise is about 5bhp, which is undetectable from the seat of the pants dyno then its not worth worrying about carbon or ally - just buy the one that fits your budget, they all do the same thing (providing you compare like with like - closed box etc) the noise may be different thats all
I had carbon on my old Hurricane as I had carbon bling engine covers too ...that was about the only decision - which under cover colour scheme do you prefer LOL

General consensus is that you lose power if you de-cat a VVC.
