at 70 mph, and then it will go off when I reduce speed ?

Check your battery hasn't come loose and shorting out against something.

Do you hear any new sounds at high speed? I had an alternator that started to seize up and would slip at high speed. May be a similar problem but not sure.

It may be that the belt is on the way out. How many miles has it done? I don't think it's a service part so when it's showing wear just replace it as it's a simple job. You could tighten it but then it may break 200 miles later when you least need it !!!

Sounds like the alternator - they sit between the manifold and bulkhead so can get very hot. If the belt fails it can take the cambelt with it - don't want to worry you but it's worth getting it looked at for that alone.

If it's the alternator itself then they're not cheap (sorry!) but Eliseparts sell one for around £175 and fitted it will cost you around £300.
