04 S2 Elise Engine Control Module Problem (Starter Relay)
Discussion
Just trying to sort out a problem on a mates S2 Elise, he had the breakdown people out last night as it wouldnt start,
Breakdown man says its starter relay (either bust or low voltage) and has bypassed the starter relay with a wire from battery straight to solonoid.
Just had a look at manual and car and it looks like the relay is grouped together with 2 others in one box, i can hear the relay clicking when you turn the key, but havnt had a chance to multimeter it yet,
Now the questions;
Has anyone else had this?
Do you have to replace the whole engine control module (ie the three relays)
Am i looking at the right relay (its underneath the engine management unit, held on with a cable tie, and two multiplugs)
Thankyou in advance!

yes Ive had it before
its the Multi Function Relay Unit (MFRU) - box size of fag packet, rear left of engine bay, tie wrapped on (hopefully!)
Ive had it faily before and then another time left me stranded, it was a dodgy plug on it (which was a bit more involved to fit a new one)
the MFRU is about a £30 part from any Rover dealer (if there are any left) ..or Lotus dealer of course
In the end I got so pissed off with problems with the thing I always carried a spare in the boot

What he said...
they look like this:

avaliable from here:

although, as also said, the loom terminals to them can be suspect at times...

Ahhhh i bask in your knowledge, it does give me a warm fuzzy feeling when i can do that for someone with a problem.......any way moving swiftly on
I pulled the left hand plug as you look from the front off and tried to start while i was still deciding if this was the part, but forgot to disarm the immobiliser, now the thing will turn over but not fire, is the immobiliser the same as the caterham type k-series ones, that can get a bit panicky if you disconnect the battery etc?
I will go and check the plug is back in tight in a minute, its not easy in the works car park!

Imob is a Lotus specific one...
that said, if you pull the battery, worste case the alarm will go off, just cycle the alarm a couple of times to re-set it.
does slound like you have a poor connection somewhere, my money is on the bigger of the two plugs onto the MFRU, S2's of your year do seem to have issues with these...
if you pull the big plug off (diss the battery first) then pull the white cover off from the terminals, take a look at the terminals themselves for dis-colouration etc, if bad, then use a pin to pull the anti-backout out the way and withdraw the connector from the plug, then either sort or replace.
