MK1 Elise - Stack binnacle dimming

A couple of years ago I had a new alarm fitted replacing the original Cobra. To install the new immobiliser socket the fitters took the steering column surround off. Since then I have a problem - the odometer reset button no longer works and in fact it seems it is jammed permanently 'on'. When I drive with the lights on the binnacle keeps changing brightness as it should do if the button is permanently depressed.

Sooooo, how hard is this likely to be to fix. Is it just a simple unscrew of the column shroud and a rewire/replace of the button? I've not tinkered with this yet so forgive my trepidation.

It's easy to remove so I'd do that first.

Perhaps they trapped one of the wires when they removed the column surround?
