Is the sport 160 ecu programable? would it run on a std engine or would you need cams etc to get full use?

Well Jimbo seeing as no one is replying to you I will give you my opinion! The difference between the Sport 160 and the standard Elise which the engine is based on are, Modified inlet and Exhaust ports, optimised compression ratio, new inlet and exhaust camshafts, VVC type cast alloy inlet manifold assembly, Modified airbox, 45mm diameter fabricated 4-2-1 exhaust manifold(as 340R), Oil cooler. On this basis it does not have a VVC mechanism so I would of thought that the ECU would be compatible. A little bit more research on the internet has identified the ECU as a GEMS unit that is programmable to some degree - see this link for details:

As the K is a noirmally aspirated engine there is very little benefit to be had just by changing the ecu. 'Chipping' really only works on turbo engines.
Tuning the K is relatively cheap but you aren't going to get good relaible results for pocket money. Two routes which will give you of the order of 140 (or a little more) are some warmer cams that will still run with the standard ecu. Talk to Dave Andrews at DVA Power about that. You need to be able to time the cams properly as well. The other route is to get the head ported either by someone like Davbe or Kiwirog at Sabre Heads. A porting job will cost about £500 but its possible that lifting the head on an otherwise OK engine may open a can of worms. The porting job is the purest engineering solution and will give good torque gains as well as useful bhp increases across the rev range. The cams will do their best work above about 4k rpm and you may lose a little below that with them.
For best results combine both porting and cams and then a decent 4-2-1 and an ecu change thrown in to get the very best out of what you've done. Budget £2-£2.5k for all the work and you'll be looking at 160-170bhp.

the sport 160 came with two different ecu's... the sva cars had the gems unit and the wvta had the other one (name escapes me).

you will see that lots of sport 160's have had emerald ecu's fitted which do allow very easy re-mapping. you simply plug in your laptop and away you go.

Essentially, sticking a Sport 160 ECU on a standard car (unless I'm very much mistaken) will make it run like a dog, if it even runs at all.

Tipper's points are well made. To get optimal power though I believe you'll need to add DTHTB's to that list too.

The first 50 cars (SVA) have a GEMS ecu this is mapable but you will need to get it unlocked by GEMS. The other WVTA cars had an EFI ECU this too can be mapped but its cost is not worth it.
