Question to the floor,

I have been offered a 2005 S2 exige N/A for a very resonable price.

It has a full service history (lotus), ac, touring pack and everything is in good nick.

The catch is that it has 80k in motorway miles, should I run for the hills or just buy the damn thing and enjoy it?

I've always wanted an Exige!!!!

Get it inspected, a proper in depth one, if everything checks out buy it (bearing in mind it may be tricky to sell on at such high miles)

The mechanicals should be ok, but you'll find the car itself may be a little more rattly than one of lesser mileage.

How much of a "discount" are you getting over a more regular mileage car? Ask yourself would you buy this car if you weren't offered it (if you see what I mean?).

The car will be about £14.5 to £15k perhaps less pending negotiations!!

Blimey, spec dependent that's a good few £k saving!

Two points to consider aside from the reliability; you might take the car over 100k miles. A high mileage Exige will be more difficult to sell on anyway, but one that's passed the magical 100k even more so.

I agree and I guess this is my concern. Part of me says I should buy it, enjoy it and worry about resale when the time comes.

If I keep it for a couple of years and do say 6k a year it will be a 92k car. Just doing some figures and I guess I could sell it for 12k at that point with out loosing out on any money.

12k for an Exige, surely that would sell?

So long as it's properly inspected, and maybe even get yourself a warranty, the ownership proposition will be great.

It's the same age (nearly) as my car was, so the components are of the same time so to speak - it's just their use is higher. It may not be a bad thing, I'm just trying to reason it in my head smile

At the end of the day it's a gamble, I think. You're getting a very good car for excellent money, but the possible negatives are decent sized bills if something goes wrong (not necessarily engine related; the tiny resistor that controls the interior fan, if it goes it's £600+ of labour alone)...anyway, if you spend a fwe £k over the 2 yrs EXTRA in problems, that's cancelled out your saving.

The other risk is you might take 1yr to sell it.

As I say, it's a gamble, but you will be getting yourself into an excellent excellent car for good money.

What car do you have at the moment?! I bought an Exige S and used it on the road and, as good as it was and as amazing as it looked, I must admit that I thought as a ROAD car my Elise 111S was better. Just a thought for you to ponder.

You sound like the wife Tony!! wink

All very good points though and I must confess I'm still undecided, proper head and heart stuff.

I've got a S1 Type 49 that, as lovely as she is, needs to go. Its got a little too uncomfortable, I want to experience S2 ownership before its too late and I had to pay a load of bills at the begining of the year, sadly I've just fallen out of love with her a little frown

I'm sure 80k motorway miles will be no worse on the car than one that has been a track car for the last 3-4 years.

I use this logic all the time, works a treat. Buy it and use the money you have on track days!

Spa & Ring trip are on the cards, cannot get much better than that in life...

I would love to buy and run an Exige with 80k on the clock.

Owning a car like an Exige should be all about the driving experience, and I have to admit with mine due to it being absolutely mint, I'm a little too precious with it. As a result I often don't use the car when I probably should be.

Although I obtain a large part of the enjoyment of ownership from spunking polish over it every weekend, as I'm applying the fifth and final coat of wax, I often cant help thinking I would be having more fun wringing it's little vomit coloured neck around some deserted roads in Wales.

So there you go.

Buy it, Use it, Love it.

Although it's not really the rock n roll answer, I'd seriously look at late S2 111S and a 111R (identical engine as exige) for the same money but much newer and less mileage.

As I said, I had both the Exige and the Elise and as glad as I am that I bought the Exige - and you just need to look at it to see why - I still think the Elise was the better car for what I did with it - high days and holidays, European trips.

Sorry to be the sensible one (sucks, doesn't it?! hehe) but for that 14.5k you're thinking of spending, you may get yourself a top spec last of the line excellent screwed together low mileage 111s ?!

Buy it, and use it.

At least you won't feel bad for putting extra miles on it just for fun and if you keep it forever who cares about the mileage?

most important get it to a dealer to check it hasnt been buzzed but with that many miles it might need a few thou spent on it but then again it still might be good value when you consider supercharged cars arent much more than normal ones in the classifieds...
