Track Day Insurance - Worth While?
Discussion
Is track day insuranace worth while? Do most people not bother and 'take a chance' ?
I am going on a novice day at Snetterton and wondered if it's worth while?
Most are asking between £150-300. Thats half my yearly insurance for one day!
Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.
Gavin.

Depending on your driving history there are companies that will include trackday cover foc on your normal policy.
In direct answer to your question the answer is how much do you worry about your car the the financial implications of (extremely unlikely) you wrote it off. Snetterton is one the countries safest circuits with lots of run off and hardly anthing to hit (other than fields). It also depends who you're doing your TD with and what sort of custom they attract. A novice day with LOT would be very well run and on track manners and behaviour with LOT are exempolary. If you're going on a mixed bag day and find yourself mixing with over-tetosteroned youngsters in £500 hatches - well I wouldn't go.
The thing to remember about track days are they are about having fun, not being the fastest. Drive at a speed you're comfortable with and let faster drivers (those with more powerful cars!) past.
Have fun, and remember its downhill from here on in as you'll spend a fortune:thumbup

When I was sliding backwards, last Friday, at speed, looking in my rear view mirror as the tyre barrier approached rapidly. I genuinely thought thank f
k I insured it for the track day.
In the end I got away with it, putting both feet in. No damage except a crack in the splitter caused by me trying to mount a kerb after the incident.
In 50,000 plus miles and numerous track days I have never had a spin. At some stage even careful drivers are going to make a misjudgement and for this moment I am very glad to pay the premium to have insurance

Sorry I don't understand this: You say you've never spun but saw a tyre barrier approaching in your rear view mirror: sound like you lost it to me!

Track day insurance should be available from about £80 IME (as a standalone policy from CCI). Some policies (CCI, Richard Egger) include eg 4 days insurance per year on an annual policy, others charge 10% of your annual premium for a day's cover (eg Hagerty).
It's very expensive, usually carries at least £1000 excess and won't cover mechanical damage (unless caused by impact).
However, having done several track days, all I can say is that you tend to relax and enjoy the experience more if you're not worrying about total financial loss.
Remember that insurance will usually only cover damage to your car regardless of fault. ie if someone else piles into you - their fault - and you're insured, but they're not, your car is covered, not theirs. Similarly if you cause an accident, you're covered not the other party. It's first party cover - not third party cover.

I've just changed my insurance with track day cover in mind. I went with
http://www.keithmichaels.co.uk/
Standard policy with the option to add trackday cover at £60 a day (excess 10% of value). I do have a fair degree of confidence in my ability.......it's just the others!

I am with Heritage and trackday cover is included for an unlimited number of days UK & Europe as long as you are a member of the organising car club. The Heritage policy is a "classic" car policy and as such is limited mileage. Mine is 7,500 although I believe that you can add to this at a cost. Not sure if it has to be a second car or not and you may require to be over a certain age. Track excess is £1k plus normal excess of £350 for the elise (£500 for the exige).
At £485 for my S1 135 Sport last year it wasn't overly cheap, however when you consider that this also included full European Breakdown cover, legal aid and unlimited trackdays, It begins to look excellent value.
I am not sure what is classic car about the policy, but they have agreed to insure my new car, an 06 S2 exige. Premium is higher again, but the premium is apparently higher in your first year of ownership of the car. This is my only gripe against them. Otherwise a top firm who acted very well when a nice lady reversed into my elise a couple of years ago. Just paint damage, but they were spot on with the claim.

I thought it's impossible to see anything other than the engine cover in an Exige's rear view mirror?
