Hi all.

I was poking about in the back of my S2 last week and noticed what seemed like fumes (I think it may be steam vapour?) in the engine bay on the far right hand side when I rev the engine.

I ought to say that whilst practical, I am no mechanic, so I dropped into a local sports car dealership that have workshop there also.

A technician had a look for me, and he said that he could smell anti freeze and noticed my water bottle was low. He thought that I was seeing small amounts become released and vapourise on contact of the engine. He owned a MG VVC and so seemed to be knowledgeable. Of course, there were no vapour sprays when I attempted to show him!

The car has done nearly 30k miles and was given its 'A' service not that long ago (Nov '08).

He said that he thought I needed a new water pump and to to fit an OEM type.

I was quoted as follows:
To replace water pump along with cam belt & balance shaft belt,

Labour £150+vat

Parts £118.99+vat

Total £268.99+vat - £309.34 inc

Does this sound right to you?

Also, could I infact do this myself?

Really appreciate your input as I feel a bit lost.

I shall let Paul Matty's have a look at it, as they are my prefered dealer...just always a drive there and back for me, despite being the closest Lotus specialists.

Many thanks,

Nick

basically you are getting a cambelt change, so for a few more pennies, you could get the C service all done and dusted and not having to think about it in November. I have mine in for its C service this week and it will have a new water pump fitted as it is only cheap for the amount of work that is needed to replace.I guess the pump on yours wasn't changed on the last C service ?

water pump is unlikely to be the problem I would suggest...

Hi, I had a rumbling noise on mine, just on tick-over. I changed the coolent myself (proper Rover type) and all sorted !! 4yrs it's supposed to last. Before I did this, I took to a professional, and he suggested the waterpump too. I knew this would be alot of labour, so tried just changing the coolent first to see, and it worked.

I would follow the other blokes advise, if the cam belt is being changed soon anyway. Right time to change the water pump at that stage. I was told most common reason for HGF was due to knackered water pump. Mine never gets up above 96'c even in slow traffic, so ask yourself does your car over-heat. On runs she stays always around 88'c - 90'c. Hope all this helps.

that's complete bullst...

for all it's issues, the water pump on the K is not one of them, that's not to say they never fail, but it's somewhat rare compared with other issues

If I had a rumbling coming from the water pump area, I would get that pump changed ASAP. It is directly running the cambelt and if it locks ( they can and do) will lunch the engine to fishing weights. You have been warned..........

Mine went and didn't take the HG with it. It just leaked some water out.

HG's fail because the gasket is crap.

Car has done just over 40k, with full service history. Sure I know HGF is mainly due to the gasket failing, that's what HGF refers to. People not stopping when the car over heats. Helped a poor bloke on the roadside the other day in his Esprit. Said he just stopped as it was getting too hot, was waiting for the AA to turn up. Back to the pump, yeah makes sense if the pump goes and linked to the cam belt has the potential to cause serious damage in there.

Having said that the noise has gone from mine, and the car never over heats. Next service in July the water pump will get checked and probably changed I reakon.

Head Gasket Failure is because of :

Low Cylinder Liner Heights
Soft/ porous cylinder head
Thermostat operation (Change to a PRT to solve this)
Putting strain on the engine before the oil is properly up to temp
using of MLS Gasket when liner heights arent at the correct height above the block
Using out of tollerance stretch bolts

or a combination of a few of the above. Not the waterpump!

Thanks all!

Will take it to Paul Matty's tomorrow for a going over, and a second opinion. Sorry for not responding earlier...I failed to tick the 'notify me of responses' box.

Much appreciated.

Been to Paul Matty's. (I arrived at lunch time...boy, you'd think I was asking for Jesus himself to appear...nobody wanted to see me!)

Never mind, got it sorted.

It was suggested I get the system pressure tested first. I failed to ask for an estimate on that...any ideas folks?

Seems sensible to take a gradual look at it rather than to start replacing the lot on a whim.

Thanks.
