Quite annoyed. Trying to renew insurance online for S2 111S as Directline have given me a comedy renewal quote. I get some reasonable rates ~£550 range, but as soon as I stick ANY sort of modification onto it (even stuff like a front splitter) they all jump by at least £200!!!! Reckon the answer must be to talk direct to some specialists. Will call CCI, A-Plan etc tomorrow......

Ridiculous.

Anyone know if any of the online sites work OK with mods?

If you have had the car a while, call Richard Eggar. I have a very modified car - honda coversion / suspension / roll cage etc etc and changing from Heritage halved my renewal quote.

Stick to the specialists,i told CCI about my Larini and Ohlins and they just said "no problem,no increase in premium".
They also undercut Admiral(who charged for everything)by £150 and i got 4 trackdays included thumbup

I've been thinking that when my Elise next goes in for a service I would upgrade with Braided brake hoses, EBC Ultimax Dics and Yellow Stuff pads.

This will be the first change from the standard car I will make. Are these like to impact on insurance? (I'm with Elephant)

You will need to speak to Elephant and see what they say but ALWAYS disclose any mods (even if you think they will not affect the insurance). You don't want problems if you have to claim

Certainly when I declared mine to Directline last year they charged for every mod (separately), even just changing to mesh grilles was about £30 (per year!!!!)

Phoned around today, CCI were first and quoted me £548, which I was happy with so I just went with them, was too busy to call others. Excellent service and didn't charge any extra for mods.

Always best to check with Insurers before any mods are done as the majority of the main stream will not allow mods on the policy and those that do might charge a lot for them being on there. Try the specialist moddified insurers as they should be able to give you a better quote due to the mods.

Some Insurers will cover the mods but in the event of an accident will replace it back to standard so look out for companies that offer like for like replacements in the event of accidents etc.

For *most* Elise owners I cannot imagine there is any benefit to NOT being insured on a specialist policy, not just for modifications (which almost all Elises have) but also for the better deals, options to do trackdays etc. If nothing else, most of them can tell the difference between a standard S1 and a Sport 160, and few will ask you how many doors it has.

Hmmm, all this prompts the question: am I paying too much for my insurance? £950 with Elephant for a 2002 Elise Sports Tourer, 25 year old, 3 years no claims, garaged in London...

Sounds a bit steep but could be 'london tax'. Mine is now £548 with CCI, 35yrs with 10+ ncd, lightly modded s2 111s, garaged in centre of derby. Interestingly adding my wife as a named driver actually reduced premiums by £50-£150, so purely from an insurance point of view, get married!!! (warning: other costs may be incurred)

My renewal quote for my Exige S sp pp was nearly £1300 yikes
The same broker "managed" to get this reduced to £725.00, I then told them the car had a Larini exhaust and the premium went down to £660.00.
Go figure.
I'm in Greater London, 5 points and a £30,000 claim two years ago.
