111R 54reg Heater
Discussion
So most likely a daft Q for most of you, but in the hot weather this got me wondering
How does the heater work, where does it get the hear from. I have for a long time assumed that it draws heat from the Radiator system, so as the car warms up, the heater is more efficient. This seemed to be born out recently when sitting in a traffic jam and the cars temp was starting to climb, I turned on the Heater Fan and the car temp dropped a couple of degrees.
Or
Am I a complete numpty(This specifically, lets not go into the general discussion) and the car heater has its own heater matrix completely independent of the car temp/cooling system

Does that mean that it is reliant to some degree on the temp of the coolant system ?
Yep - entirley. Untill the engine thermostat is open then there is no heating. Some cars have a small electrical element in the heater to aid early de-misting but I found no evidence of this. It can take up to 5 miles for the thermostat to open on a cold day.bordseye said:
Not intended as a criticism of you personally, but what on earth is our education system doing when people dont know simple basics like this?
What a strange comment
Personally I find the standard of basic English grammar (as seen on here and other forums) far more worrying.
I think my school assumed we'd have a 'man' to fix cars for us

where were you educated for that to be on the curriculum ?.... ( or when?)
Car mechanics wasnt on the curriculum but physics and engineering were, and curiosity was encouraged. So of course the basics of the internal combustion engine were covered, as well as gearboxes and suspensions. And thats before any spare time spent taking things to bits and pottering with old carsI dont want to offend the OP who has asked a question because he doesnt know the answer. Good for him having the courage to do so. But it is a noddy question, and if our education system is supposed to be a preparation for life than he shouldnt have been left without basic knowledge like this.
Or to put it another way - in life you do need mechanical knowledge, but you dont need Shakespeare
No offense taken
All I would say is that during my eduaction other things took my interest primarily military hardware. Knowing muzzle velocities, calibres, burst radius and that sort of things are most probably something you know of, not about. Yes I still loved cars, but it was purely aesthetics that took my interest.

Interesting topic, I am sure today your more likely to learn how to programme your ECU rather than learning about the engine and probably more relevant for some cars.
Ok Bordseye it is a novice question for you, but I am sure you have some of these yourself from your new love of the circuit.

Has these interests had great value in the investment banking arena? All I would say is that during my eduaction other things took my interest primarily military hardware. You would have loved my engineering degree, we built 2 bazookas from a design in the anarchists cookbook, mounted them on a 2 seat microlight ..... I could tell you the rest but I am expecting a knock on the door to investigate my reading material....
even just using tennis balls as ammo, we managed to floor a cow
