Hi there, I'm an ex Elise owner (series 1 sport 135) who is considering getting one again -the trouble is I've got quite a long commute nowadays.

I recently changed jobs and I now have a 36 mile each way commute, about 90% of which is on a dual carriageway. Would I be stupid to consider an Elise as my only car?

Is there anyone else on here who does a long commute in an Elise? How do you find it?

Thanks,

Stu.

Hey Stu

I commute just over 70 kilometers each way (45 miles ?) everyday in a 111R with broken airco smile

No problem for me and most of it on motorways with a stage 2 exhaust.

Am thinking about getting a TVR instead - not because I don't like the Elise anymore - just because I always wanted one really !

no worries at all - I used mine as a daily driver, 70 mile each way commute to the office and sometimes 150-400 miles in a day to/from customer meetings ..there are quite a few people who use them daily for way more ...most are in the +100K mile club now smile

When I first got mine I used it for work for quiet a while clocking 100/150 miles daily.
I've recently bought a pair of earplugs for longer runs up Mways. Ironically they help the music from the stereo to become much clearer - its almost like driving an ordinary car with the lack of backround noise.

I have done some obscene commuting. This year it was a round trip of 200 miles a day for 6 months. Last year I was commuting a round trip of 350miles a day. No problem in a 111R.

The problem is you arrive a little "wired" and it may take a little time to calm down. First meeting of the day can be a little abrupt.

I commute 70miles each way along the A3+A31,
but just 2-3 times a week.

The Elise is great for that,
I'd wish there were more corners along the road and less rain during the year though wink

BFDING smile

definately music and ear plugs are essentially for the daily motorway and traffic jam grind in the Elise smile

Which Elise are you considerring? I'd imagine an S2 111s or 111r is going to b more than up to the job. Don't think I'd be overly keen on doing that everday in my S1 but it would certainly be possible.

Thanks for the comments so for everyone.

It's definitely something to consider then.

Now then what type - I'm thinking 111s or the toyota engined s, definitely with aircon (budget ~£15k)?

Should be fine then. Besides which, you could always sell it and try a different strategy if you find you aren't enjoying it.

I'd say, stick to a touring spec, modest exhaust etc and it shouldn't be too bad at all.

I used to work with someone who did over 30 miles each way in an early S1 for several years. She only stopped after she'd moved closer to work confused.

I do a 60 mile round trip commute in my Europa. Apart from getting in and out elegantly, it is more comfortable than the BMW or Audi I used to use.....

Supple, great driving position, light controls.

Me too, commute is 5 mile, often ends up nearer 25 mile on the way home, would be rude not to take the scenic route. laugh

A friend of mine did 30 miles of motorway each way in his S1 Elise. It would have driven me crazy, but he managed ok! I run an S2 111S as a daily driver and yes, I do motorways in it, but for most motorway journeys I've bought a BMW to relieve the tedium.

I used my old s2 with no A/C for a 90 mile commute for just under three years. It was a lovely journey taking in all the visual delights of the M6 in and around Birmingham.
