just wondering if you can remove and replace the rear brake pads on the elise s2 without using the special piston retraction tool mentioned in the service notes?

reason for doing this is i'm unsure if the rear brakes are a bit seased and not moving freely, but they don't seam to be binding on the disk so maybe there ok

Apparently not - check this thread out, Thub reckons you can do the S1 with needle nose pliers - the S2 alomost certainly has the same caliper so it should be OK.

What seems to be the problem??

i've been told that the rear brakes may not be moving freely,( unsue if this is correct myself) they do have a little surface rust on the calipers and the centre of the disk, the brakes do seam to operate ok when driving

Normal. The rear brakes 'sweep' only the outer 75% of the disc surface.

The Elise uses the same size discs front and back. but smaller pads for the rear brakes, so they don't 'reach' all the way to the center of the disc.

Yes. Identical.

As long as the pads are for steel discs and not the older S1 MMC brakes. Phyiscally these will still fit, but the pad material is not suited for steel discs as used on the S2 (no MMC for the S2)

how much movement should you be able to see the rear calipers moving onto the disk? ( i know this may seam a daft question)

The just turning them in with fine nosed pliers my not be as easy as it sounds - you need a fair amout of push at the same time, or they will not go back in!

Hardly any (a couple of mm or less) the pads sit just off the disks til you press the pedal. When you release it, the pads are pushed off the disks (very bad terminology there) so there is a clearance.

Almost nil, unless you are suffering from pad knock-back.
