Hello lads, first time on here so don't be to hard on me. My wife has a beetle, brill car!, and I would like her to part-ex it for a lotus elise. I own a new mini that she could drive and I could have the elise for work. Are the mk-1's reliable and can they be used every day. My last 'fun car' was a caterham but the roof was a bit leaky so day to day driving was in some ways hard but totally adictive!.

Hi mines a daily drive (not to far i admit!) mine seems reliable so far!....beetles are nice cars, but an elise is somthing else! when you get one park it next t the beetle and you will see how low it sits-i drove my girlfriends clio and the damn thing feels like your driving a bus!!!!!...

I love my s1 i gotta say & it would very hard for me to start driving a normal car again!..

I would say drive an elise first the s1 (so im told) is a more raw drivers car (meaning loud in real persons talk) if you have a mini then you wont be to shoxked by all the bouncing around!...

Never driven an s2 as i just couldnt afford one...how about an exige-now thats a good option!!!!!.

I'm worried that you thought the new beetle was a good car. Honestly they are awful!

Still have a few test drives and see what you like. They are more livable than Caterams but an S2 is definitely more civilised. An S2 will be 17-18k min (17 as an absolute min from a desperate guy imho, but there's a nice looking one going for that on SELOC at the moment (www.seloc.org)).

Hi Carps
I have a 47k 1997 S1. I use it to commute everyday, rain or shine & have done so for just over a year. It has had the odd common niggle (rattles etc.), but has never left me stranded (hope that isn't the kiss of death!).

My round trip to work is circa 80miles, I get over 42mpg - which I'm sure must be better than a beetle? Plus LOTS more performance

The S1 is pretty basic & unrefined - but not as much as a Caterham.

Thanks lads the info is great and now all I have to do is talk the wife in getting rid of her pride and joy. I will have to take out a few cars at Adrian Blythe?.

Look, a slip of words on my behalf o.k?, about the beetle. What about the s2 sports tourer for a daily runner.
