Spotted a small green van with the Tomtom logo on its side and what appeared to be cameras on each corner of the roof and a radaresque small dome in the centre of the roof.

Are they creating a picture database for a new satnav display?

Or was it one of their breakdown vans with lights on the roof..?

That will have been a TomTom (TT) mapping vehicle, up until recently TT purchased mapping data from TeleAtlas (TA), they bought TA so now TT are responsible for the map data creation.
The cameras record all the time the vehicle is being driven, the footage is then used for street name identification along with a whole raft of other uses that can be gleened from the information such as POI locational data - Mike

So it appears that TT are the supplier of mapping data to Google (Google Maps use TeleAtlas). I wonder whether that will become a bigger business than selling satnavs?

Mike Alder, you seem to know a lot about TT's. Is there a current TT with the Itinerary feature? Have they sorted out most of the disadvantages of the 1000 range?

The only thing I've found missing on my 1005 Live is the ability to drag & drop stuff from the desktop to the mounted TomTom (has to be done through a TomTom's webpage), and the ability to create itineraries.

Everything else seems to be as it was on my 750 Live.

None of the current product range supports Itinerary planning, I would go as far as to say when multi-point routes are made available they won't be the same as what you are used to from earlier devices (there is quite a bit of information on this topic on TomTom's own web site) - Mike
